Listen, the information about different probe lengths is very interesting. Considering that our engines actively consume oil, maybe GM decided to play it safe? by shortening the probes?

So let me ask you this, playing devils advocate. If you continue to run 9 quarts and eventually have engine troubles. You're warranty claims will be denied because you are not using the specified amount of oil. You are willingly neglecting it.

You can run around the logic in your head as much as you want. But the spec is 8 quarts! Why mess with it. Overfilling oil leads to aerating the oil, which leads to foaming, which leads to oil starvation, oil starvation = bad.

Sorry if that's not what you want to hear. You came here asking for advice, the correct advice was supplied.
Nothing will happen to the engine if the oil level is 0.5 liters above the maximum level. Where does aeration come from? where does the foaming come from? This only happens when water gets into the oil.

Exactly. On an 8-quart engine, a half a qt over is nothing at all to worry about.

No)) I already wrote that filling the oil volume to 8 liters, not 8 quarts, but precisely 8 liters, gives the Max level on the dipstick. overfilling another 0.5 liters will not cause any problems for the engine. Most likely, this additional volume was initially included by the manufacturer to add fuel, which can be up to 4-5% of the oil volume.
I think with an 8 quart fill you get an oil level midway between min and max. By filling 8 liters, we get the Max level.

Foaming and aeration is caused when the oil level in the pan is too high and the crankshaft splashes through the oil thousands of times per minute. At the proper fill level the crankshaft is above the oil and not traveling through it.

Let's remember what the L87 looks like and where its crankshaft is located. I can’t even imagine how much oil needs to be poured in there for the level to reach the crankshaft. Obviously not 0.5 liters)

Wow, this discussion went from the simple (short dipstick?), to the philosophical (metric vs English measurement), to the conspiracy of GM selling us bad design.

My service bill at the Dealer charged me for 8 quarts at $6.99 each. I can assure you that they would have charged me for 9 if they had used 9 quarts. Oil level was right in the middle of the hash marks. But wait, they did charge me $24.99 for a Premium Oil Conditioner that was not mentioned up front. That must have raised the oil level a little right? Maybe there is a conspiracy!

Where are you guys getting that it takes 8 liters vice 8 quarts,,, because GM specifically says 8 quarts or 7.6 liters

And really, holy crap, a five page thread because someone can't read a dipstick (or can't count) and thinks that their truck must be special and is different from the other literally hundreds of thousands of identical trucks out there.

yeah, right, this was the part that was confusing me. I know us Americans don’t know much about the metric system, but qt L
