My tailgate goes up partially and then closes. It never goes up to the same height before closing. It locks properly when it is fully down. It all started when I had the tail gate open while backing up. I raised the tailgate in order to be able to see a trailer I was backing up. Nothing hit the tailgate.

i have had my auto liftgate open while doing the same and never had an issue. Sorry thats all i can contribute, but slowly reversing with it open shouldn't cause you any issues.

Mine did it and had a bad shock that helps lift tailgate. I replaced both in about ten minutes with one screwdriver very quick your local auto parts will have.

luvtocruiser is correct. It's the shocks. Ordered mine online $50 self install in 10 minutes!
