I always wonder about this, so Im glad someone has made a thread about it. I have a 1996, so is better to always tow in 3rd, or should I tow in OD? And what about when im towing at highway speeds? Normally when I tow, it is in OD and under any sort of stress, the TC will unlock almost instantly which I guess puts it in 4th? (tranny newb, sorry :( ). I HATE when im towing and my tranny is constantly shifting (or technically the TC locking and unlocking?)

I usually tow in D, the same thing goes for snow plowing. I'm also in Chicago with no mountains and a big ass trans oil cooler and a large capacity trans pan running ams oil synthetic fluid. Haven't had any problems and around 166K on the odo.

This is good info. Personally I have always found that towing in 3 has produced butter fuel economy too.
