I'm going with solenoid...change them both. Use OEM (I know you do)
Both? There’s more than 2 isn’t there? More like 4? I see the 3-2 as one p/n 24212327 GM Genuine and then the 1-2/ 2-3/ 3-4 as 24230298 GM Genuine according to Rock Auto. GM Parts Giant doesn’t even list a 3-2 and GMPartsdirect doesn’t list a 2-3 but their 3-2 shows as 24227792. Their 1-2 and 3-4 shows as the same as RA 24230298.
Anyway I ordered the 3-2 based on the number RA shows. Hope it’s right. What other(s)should I replace ?

I guess because it’s hard to make, idk. The shafts are different sizes/ splines and the adapter was supposedly hard to machine and the guy had to get something like 50 orders before the place would tool up for them.
....because its worth it is the answer

time2kill on pt.net or silveradoss.com i think i paid 475 for it with a core

Last week when I replaced the broken stereo mount I got the column cover pinched when I installed the dash bezel and it got all bent out of shape so today I pulled the steering wheel, removed the cover and used a heat gun to get it back in shape. Only problem was the little clip that holds the narrow part together back behind the steering shifter boot was broken. I drilled a couple tiny holes and used a piece of wire to tie it together. It bothers me, and the new cover is $60 for a black aftermarket one. The 99-02’s are different of course- the 03-06 are easy to find cheap. I might wait until I can get to a wrecking yard.
What makes the covers different between the years?

Yeah that’s the guy. But you don’t have a NVG149 TC do you? Or was that on another truck you had?

Just two. The 98 part number. Should be around $20 for a pair. Check eBay

edit. I didn't read very well. I've never had an issue with the downshift stuff. There is another solenoid for that and one to lock up tcc. Usually it's just the two I mentioned that fail. Should throw a code IIRC
