And the last part is what is taking me forever. I got #1 cylinder done and I swear it took me 45 minutes. The first one went smooth but the second didn’t want to center and I fought and fought to get the keepers in. I add a dab of grease to the keepers to stick them to the valve stem while I slowly let off on the compressor. I’ll probably get better as I go but it’s as hard as I remember the last time I did this.

Damn. That seems like a PITA Mark. But take it easy, that’s your specialty!

What are you using to keep the valves closed?

The top dead center method. With the dots on the cam and crank gears lined up, 1 & 6 are at top, rotate the cam 45* and it’s 8 & 5, rotate and it’s 7& 4, and finally 3 & 2. When a cylinder is at TDC the valves can only fall down a bit, and I can usually compress the spring and then pull them all the way up and they stay. I have a tool to hook to my compressor to pressurize a cylinder but it’s a PIA, it’s like doing plugs and I don’t want to do plugs more than once. And then the compressor is running all the time.

With a piece of nylon rope in the cylinder or just metal to metal?

Springs and rockers done, and I’m starting to reassemble. I’m painting a few parts like front cover and valve covers but not getting too crazy. I wish I’d painted the water pump but I did that on The Beast and prep is a ***** so I’m leaving it. Plus I need to get this finished tomorrow because it’s gonna rain for a few days.
