For the last 4 months or so every so often I'll notice a slight slip in first gear when pulling away from a complete stop. This has not happened at all when the trans is cold. Only after driving on the freeway for say an hour or so when the trans is warm. All other gears shift fine as does reverse. The truck is a daily driver and I'd say over the course of 4 months I've noticed the slip maybe 4-5 times. When the slip happens it lasts maybe one and a half to two seconds.

The vehicle is an 03 Yukon with just over 100k. I'm having some warranty repair work done at a local GM dealer and mentioned it to them. They just called and said electronically they could not find anything wrong with it. I'm having them do a fluid change and hopefully that will help as I've had the vehicle about a year and have no idea when the last trans service was completed.

Is this a sign of problems to come? I know the 4L60-E is not exactly the most reliable transmission in the world. I have about 24k miles left on my extended warranty so hopefully if it's going out on me it goes out before thats up.

On a side note.... IF I need a transmission replacement and I'm out of warranty what do you guys recommend? Have a transmission shop re-build it? Get a goodwrench replacement? Swap out for a 4L80-E? What's the best value?

I never claim to be a master mechanic on transmissions but I did have that type situation happen on an a Mustang I owned. It ended up being a low amount of tranny fluid- having it serviced cleared it right up.

BUT, perhaps others can clue you in on other potentials...

Just got it back from the shop. I'll report back if/when the slip happens again.

I'd check the fluid level yourself. Got a rebuilt gm tranny last year and they gave it to me with fluid level right at low mark...added a pint to bring up to almost full line. Anyone can make mistakes at the service dept.
