I normally run a 12" RF Punch sub in its own enclosure behind the second row. It works fantastic but takes too much space (as much as one of the third row seats). When I travel with the family, more luggage space would be real nice so I'm considering what my part-time sub option might be.

Something integrated in the quarter panel where the factory sub would be perfect as it maximizes cargo space. Has anybody used the factory enclosure with a better sub and external amplification? I know the MTX kit is an option but its $$$ for as little as I am going to probably use it. Will the MTX sound much better than a better sub in the factory enclosure? I've heard mixed reviews on the MTX. Is it worth the $300? It doesn't need to sound like the 12", but I sure as heck want to know there is a sub back there......

look into the sundown audio SA 8. little guys packs a big punch. not sure how well it will fit in the factory sub location as it is pretty beefer. their smaller model E-8 should fit much better and will still sound great.

i personally own an SA-12 and this 12 packs some serious punch. they are very well known on gmfullsize and are on their way to becoming one of the greats.

Okey-dokey. I checked it out- the E-8 says it requires 0.25 cu ft of sealed airspace. Next question- without me pulling the factory enclosure from the truck and filling it up with water to measure volume, does anyone know how many cubic feet the factory box is? I'm sure its made of pretty ****** plastic but could probably be beefed up with some dynamat to dampen it and some fiber batting inside to improve the sound quality.

Hmmmm......

I'm in a similar scenario. Want to add some bass to the 'hoe but don't want to take up a bunch of room. I'm thinking about putting something a little nicer in the 8" factory box as well, just don't want it to sound like shit.

When I got my 97 Yukon back in 2000 I had same problem. I had a 15" Hart and 1000watt U.S. Amp I wanted to put in the cargo area... But then no room to haul anything. I ended up buying an Infinity Basslink. Mounted it to the floor in the upright position and tucked it in the space just behind the wheel well. Works great and is self powered so you dont have to buy an amp too, its also fully adjustable. Ive seen people put velcro on the mounting feet of these for quick removal. Might work out good for you.

Already got a couple rockford fosgate amps mounted beneath the second row, one dedicated to the sub(s). I think utilizing the 8" in the quarter panel will be best way for me to go for getting space I need. I've run 8's, 10's and 12's. Never a 15." I'm thinking my 12" is too big for what I want right now (a good tight bass/kick drum hit for most of what I listen to). The 8" is probably going to be too small.... I think I have an old bazooka tube with an 8" orion sub somewhere. Might see what it sounds like. Probably like crap after the 12.....

I heard the MTX boxes struggle a bit because they are made of plastic instead of MDF. They resonate too much. Thats what I heard from a dealer anyway..

I modified the factory sub box to house a JL 8W3 in the stock location, and it sounds amazing! I love it! It doesn't give you that shake your neighbors windows kinda bass but its good enough for the people inside the vehicle. I've been told by passengers that it sounds like a 10 or even a 12. And I didn't have to relocate the jack either.
