it looks like the port actually fires out through the stock grill opening so that may not be too bad but I agree. The sub firing against the panel isn't a good idea unless they cut the panel and modified it which I don't know if they did or not. I couldn't find the finished pictures online only these so I guess the rest is up to our imagination.

and yes, the next one I build for my tahoe will be MDF and glass also. I've done all glass enclosures before and have never had an issue with them. In fact I just did one in my bro-n-laws TC for an 8W3 and it bangs good!! I made a stealth enclosure that fits next to the spare under the factory mat.

I may eventually move up to a 10" and if I do I'll change the enclosure then. But until then I'm happy with what I have and it sounds good enough for ME and my passengers. I could care less if I could be heard down the block. Those days are over for me. :) Its not about SPL anymore like when I used to compete...

yea im all SQ now not so much SPL like in old days.. how does that 8w3 sound.. i have been thinking to mod that into my wifes element in the stock front console box..

and a 10 vs a factory sub is a world of difference..

I love it! It sounds amazing with all types of music and my music library is vast. I've got everything from classical to mexican and everything in between. :) Its got good thump for the tight bass and pretty decent lows for some of the hip hop/rap songs. Its a very nice all around sub for a decent price. I pd something like $150 for mine and I just put one in my wifes car last weekend, which will soon be my son's car. :) I was going to put a 10W3 but went with the 8W3 instead and WOW! Its in a ported enclosure in the car and it sounds GOOOD!!! My son loves it!

doesn't effin fit...

Fit the 8W3 into the factory box- used a 3/4" sectiion of hickory as the adapter plate. Damn plastic trim cover won't clear it....

Sounds pretty good....but that factory enclosure is definitely a compromise. I think it sounds good with sub-bass (played Big KRT "Money on the Floor" and it pounded like my 12" with the really low stuff, then put on some hard rock and it was less impressive). I'm a bit disappointed with higher bass notes lacking kick- they sound kind of muddy. I left it in the truck with the trim panel off and will play around with different music tomorrow on the way too and from work - I'll go through some different stuff on the iPod. I can't get it to fit under the plastic side cover anyway so its on to plan "b". The recommended JL ported box. The box is about 80% done- still have to caulk it, install the port and carpet it. It is tiny compared to the 12" box I've been using. I hope to have it done this weekend.... the numbers on the JL designed box absolutely rock.

Did you trim the factory enclosure before adding the new face? I trimmed about a 1/2" off the face before I added the new 1/2" face I cut out.

You can definitely fit a 10" but you have to relocate the jack which isn't that big a deal and it'll still fit behind the factory panel.

Keeping my eyes on this thread. The console Bose sub isnt cutting it anymore but I can't give up any cargo space.

Did you trim the factory enclosure before adding the new face? I trimmed about a 1/2" off the face before I added the new 1/2" face I cut out.

I did not sir. I just bolted by adapter to the front of the factory box. Where/how did you trim off 1/2" of the box? Did you mill it off?

Here's what I might do instead.....

I think I can mount the JL sub directly on the enclosure without an adapter plate if I seal off those round sections where the factory sub screwed in. Maybe jigsaw some round wood pieces to fit in those four areas and seal with caulk. They could probably be filled and sealed with just caulk but that would be kinda jakey. That should take care of the clearance issue with the trim panel.

As far as the sub sounding a bit muddy at higher frequencies.... I remembered this morning the box is still a bit too big for JL's specs. I need to get a block of wood in there to eat up some of the that volume and see if I can tighten it up. (my wood-working buddy said we could get a liquid epoxy and pour in the exact volume I want but then that will pretty much keep me stuck with that sub for that enclosure as that epoxy will never come out). The volume of the factory box, as I measured it, is 0.34 cu ft. JL wants 0.30 for the sealed box (which is how I am running the factory box). Add the additional volume of the adapter plate on top of the box and my volume is even a little more. Now the additional volume of the JL sub (huge magnet) vs. the tiny factory shit might even out that volume addition of the plate. JL lists the volume of their speaker but I have no idea what the volume of the factory junk is.

On my way to work- AC-DC, Back in Black, sounded *ok*, bottom end sounds a lot better in the 12". Rush, Moving Pictures sounded real good- the sub-bass in YYZ sounded nearly as good as the 12" if not quite as loud. Neil Young and Crazy Horse- Not bad.... Tried some Black Eyed Peas- it was OK, not great.

So.....I think the tuning is off with the box volume being off. I'm going to try to fix that and will report back the results. Probably won't know that until tomorrow or the weekend....

Going to move forward with the JL recommended ported box just because the numbers on it look so good. That should showcase that sub at its very best...

(I'm powering the sub with a dedicated and bridged Punch 150 amp, adjustable electronic crossover between 50 and 120 Hz, Pioneer head unit.)
