so i was on the interstate at 330 in the morning last night and ........BOOM all of the sudden the truck locks up and starts slowing down! so im like "crap this is gonna big bucks!"(which im sure im right ughhh):emotions122: well now i got it home ( drove all 17 miles in first gear bc i do not have any other gear or reverse) my question is

whats the best route to go? im really tight on funds so my options dont look that great but

i would like to do either a
-rebuild
-used/junkyard trans
-4l80e swap (if its even possible to do in a week end and doesnt cost an arm and a leg)
or ......... what do yall suggest and what do i need to look for when doing any of these?

also can someone point me in the direction of a tranmission change write up?

thanks in advance guys!

A used transmission is probably the most cost effective, but then you're left guessing how long that will last and if the mileage advertised is accurate. Unless you're willing to inspect it or have it inspected. I think in the long run, it would be more worth it to just rebuild with beefed up internals, if you are able to rebuild it yourself. You could also take it to a reputable shop that doesn't charge an arm and a leg, that will rebuild and address the weak points of the 4L60e.

The 4L80e is a more durable transmission, but you'd have to modify the transmission mount cross member to accommodate this transmission. I think you need the wiring harness, computer, and maybe driveshaft(s) and a flex-pate/TC space (not 100% sure on those last two, I'm sure someone will chime in on that).

My transmission is currently injured, but still gets the job done for now. I'm going to plan ahead and spend the extra money for a beefed up replacement transmission and install it over a weekend. For me, that is more cost effective in the long run and probably the best route to go as far as reliability, power-handling, etc. Most shops around here would charge more to rebuild than if I were to buy a new/reman/performance replacement. You could consider this option as well.

If you have the skills/tools to rebuild a transmission, or know of a fair-priced/honest/reputable shop, then there's nothing wrong with rebuilding a transmission if you have a good rebuildable core to work with, have it done the right way, and you address all the weak spots.

well heres the deal i dont know if its rebuildable like i said i had to drive it home 17 miles with it screeching and whining most of the way! also the reason it failed was because the rear seal and the front shaft seal blew out and pissed all the fluid on the ground and i did not know this til after it went boom! so it was pretty much ran dry for around 5-10 miles is the best guess i can make at it so rebuildable ???? and from what im am reading the 4l60e is a bastard child and has undergone so many changes every year that you almost have to swap it out for your year model ughhhh! and like a stated above i dont have 1800 dollars to drop on a new/reman! a rebuild is around 500-600 and thats doable but ........... i have to have a good rebuildable core and i dont have the money to throw at this one if it turns out it is bad so any suggestions?

I hear you on the funds man, I'm often in that boat due to bills and shit. I can't say for sure, but it sounds like your current transmission may not be worth rebuilding. Again I'm not certain. A decent shop will figure out for free if its rebuildable or not.

For your situation, I'd figure out if your current tranny is rebuildable. If so work from there. If not, buy a used or junkyard tranny with relatively low mileage, inspect it, or have it inspected and use that for a while, and in the meantime you can figure out which direction to go.

no problems with my rebuild. been doing great.

i would say your best bet is to have it rebuilt. junk yard trans isn't going to help you if it craps out in 5-6 months, you'll be back in the same boat. OR you could go with a junkyard trans if its the DD and rebuild the stocker.

Depends on who you talk too ... and exactly how much you CAN do on your own. I was able to rebuild mine in may garage without anything special.
