will a 4l80e out of a like 97 2500hd truck take place of my 4l60e in my 97 tahoe? i was thanking the 4l80 would handle the motor im building with a 150 shot better then the 4l60 will.

The 4L80e fits just fine. If you are removing it from the HD PU truck, include the wiring harness, ECM, shift linkage if manual 4x4 and dip stick and tube if possible.

OBD2 handles the trans but needs to have the tweaked. There are a few minor “pin out” differences between the two wiring harness’s. You can make the changes to the harness yourself if you are into wiring.

I decided to skip over all of that BS and went to a separate computer to run the trans. That is the route I would go for better control of the shift points, etc. :)

you also have to take into account that the 4l80e is bigger/longer, so you will need a new trans x member, along with a new rear driveshaft and front driveshaft if you have it..if your 4x4, im not sure if the tcase is the same or not either...you will need a new flex plate for your motor since the 4l80e has 6 bolts holding the converter on and the 4l60e has 3..also you will be slower off the line with a 4l80e compared to a 4l60e, but it makes up for it in strength..

I found that the existing cross member for the 4L60 can be slid back to the next set of holes in the frame and works for the 4L80 using the same mount.

If the trans is coming from a “doner” truck, take the transfer case and both drive shafts as well.

As far as acceleration, it is true, the 4L80 has a taller first gear, but a higher stall speed will easily erase that small advantage. Once you are moving, the gears are closer ratio, just like the old muscle car 4 speeds. Nxtahoe97 is running 4:10 gears, which should do well with the 4L80.

My flexplate for the 4L60 had six bolt holes in it, even though they only used three bolts for the 60. I’m guessing the 97 should be the same.

I have the manual transfer case and it was modified by changing the through put shaft to the larger size. Same case, same chain, front drive shaft output remained the same.

Having a drive shaft shortened or a new one made is not difficult. Most cities have drive shaft services.

Having had the 4L80e for a few years now, I wish I would have switched several years earlier. Instead, I pissed away several thousand dollars trying to get 4L60’s to handle big power.

Thanks for chiming in and helping del how's you baby running as of recent?

My “Tuner” stopped by yesterday and today for a pair of 3 hour “fine tunning” sessions. As you know wide open throttle on a dyno is easy to set up, but highway and city cruising smoothness takes time. We did the city yesterday and the highway today. We use a LM2 wideband in the tailpipe as a third opinion.
Should be perfect for the Summer now.

The newly reworked TC is incredible. It allows the turbo’s to really get wound up into their “chain reaction” before launching. I’m trying to figure out a way to mount a video camera inside to record a Four Wheel Drive Launch. I’m dropping the trans brake at 3500 rpm’s and it feels like you just got rear ended by a speeding Semi. I will probably discover the next weakest link in the drive train soon. :emotions122:
