Hey guys, so I'm having some issues lately. I have a 1996 2 dr Tahoe, 5.7. I noticed that my water pump was starting to leak so i assumed the cold weather got to the packing in the back so i went and got another one, but as i left i noticed it was idling very low and rough, so i gave it some gas and it lagged for a minute but picked up and seemed fine.

On my way home it died on me at the light and wouldn't start for anything, it would turn over and want to go but just wasn't in the mood, until about 30 minutes later it slowly pushed its way back to life at which point i got off the road. I toed it home and it has been in the garage. I got the water pump all done, and picked up a new fuel pump assuming that was my problem, changed the pump the inline filter and the in tank filter but its still not running. it huffs and puff and wants to go but its just not seeming to get the gas. do you guys have any idea what could be going on? Im kinda at a loss right now. One minute runs like a top the next its a dead stop.

Codes?? How long and how low did you run the radiator?? It's possible you cracked a head or popped a head gasket ...

Can you extract any codes? It could be an electronic related issue but if no codes are present I am inclined to think a broken vacuum line somewhere or the fuel pressure reg just broke. Or possibly something in the ignition system just gave.

Update time, I messed around the with relay and to my amazement it started after some coaxing but it ran like shit, I also had a big cloud of smoke (i couldn't tell the colour, cus i was outside in the dark with a trouble light) Ill check on that tomorrow morning, I'm thinking now that it could be a head problem with the smoke, the radiator got pretty low at points but i tried hard to keep it cool it did spike once, right when it quit on me. Maybe warped head or shot gasket. As for the rough idle it could be explained by a load of bad gas, i did get 50$ worth right before all this loveliness happened. It would also explain the lag in throttle as well as when I'm at idle or in gear it shakes like its about to explode when i give it any peddle.

Anyone have thoughts on what i have discovered so far?

Get that color of smoke in the morning that will tell a lot. I blew a head gasket between two cylinder this year but it still ran and moved pretty good. If gas was issue either a water issue or an accidental load or mix of diesel or some other kind of contamination. Will wait on smoke results. Check the oil for contamination too.

If the gas is bad all you have to do is add octane booster and let her run until I finds its way into the engine, however I don't think it's bad gas. That exhaust cloud may be the tell tale. Do us a favor and drsin your oil into an open pan. If there is coolant in it you have a head gasket that has failed, a warped head, or a cracked block. If the oil is good put it back in the engine, unless it's due for an oil change and just finish the job.

Alright guys update number two!

So after changing the fuel pump, fuel filter, strainer, water pump, alternator, idler pulley, battery, and starter. I have finally met my match. After checking my oil for the second time (the first being right after it stopped running) I have a problem. It looks like diarrhoea leading me to believe I have either cracked the block internally, warped a head, or lost a gasket. So tomorrow I will be pulling the block out so I can drain all the "poo" out of it and figuring out what is really going on. Oh and to top it off, it turns over a bit then feels like it hits something.

So now here is my question to you if you don't have anything else to try before I pull the block out. I'll most likely be rebuilding most, if not all of the block, and would love to make that thing tear up the pavement but Im setting a budget of 1000-1200 dollars to do it. What do you guys think, what should I be putting into it, give me a list I can work off of and we'll go from there.

I say a gasket and maybe hydraulic-ed cylinder from said gasket. I think a cracked head or block is not an issue. I would pull your plugs and blow out the cylinders. If you did not see any cracks around starter mount boss just pull your heads first to inspect about 70-80% engine by doing that.

Sunlit that was my first thought but after seeing the oil, and feeling it almost hit something like something was binding makes me think that there is more too it. But in the interest of doing the simple stuff first ill pull the heads and see what i can in the morning

Got any other thoughts? ill post some pictures tomorrow if i can

Lastly, anyone got any ideas on how to get my block clean on the inside? its going to be a mess based on the oil that is on my dip stick.
