Ok so i have a 01 GMC Yukon with the 5.3 V8 and i took it to pass smog and it failed because apparently two sensors where incomplete they told me to drive it since it didnt have no check engine light drove it for 100 miles took it back and said that the secondary air injector still was pending pump is running and i can hear it in the morning or when i touch the intake for the pump i can feel the air being sucked in ive driven 200 miles just to reset the secondary air injector........ changed fused and i still have the secondary air injection incomplete i have NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON

I check it with my ODB2 and Torque app

So basically your Secondary Air Injection Monitor has not completed running it's tests. For it to run it's tests you have to perform what is called an emissions drive cycle. You can do this by following the instructions below. The mechanic tells you to "drive it 100 miles" because that will usually meet all of the criteria in that timeframe rather than handing the customer the exact criteria that must be met for these monitors to run for safety reasons. If you read the criterea, you will understand why that would be a bad idea. LOL

This is the Secondary Air Injection Monitor part of the drive cycle, not the complete Emissions drive cycle. Do just this part and your monitor should show "ready".

If you perform these criterea and the monitor is still not ready, you will need a PCM calibration update (ECM flash). Good luck.

Why did he change what he did? Did he have any codes indicating that? Did he tell you how he went about trobleshooting the issue narrowing it down to the pump?

ECM calibration update (flash) can be performed by the Dealership or independent shops that have a compliant J2534 passthrough tool and access to GM's TIS (subscription based service).

My shop does it but we service many GM vehicles to afford the cost.

So take it back and have them verify the fix they did by getting it to pass the Secondary air monitor. You may have to leave it for a bit but if it's really fixed, they should have it back to you quickly. If they can't get it to pass, they may have misdiagnosed /incompletely diagnosed the issue and need to continue to diagnose the issue if you in-fact paid for diagnosis. Incomplete diagnosis does happen and it's not either party's fault at times.

For instance, if a car is brought in on a tow-truck for a hole in the radiator, there is no way for a tech to know that your thermostat is not functioning properly until the radiator is fixed first.

If they find another problem it may or may not fall on them since the system was indeed faulted by those things replaced and whether or not you paid for a diagnosis or just told them to replace so/so part. In this case it sounds like they looked for and found an issue but did you pay for them to do that is the issue.

Basically take it back. Say it still wont run the Secondary air monitor and I've done the drive cycle. Hell, print it out and take it with you so they know you know what is going on. Their job may not be done. The flipside is they have done everything correctly and you just haven't done a proper drive cycle yet.

So basically you are on your own.

Techs/shops hate when customers do this. They come in and get a diagnosis. A diag usually costs about $90-$100 so basically 1 hr shop labor time. I'd say 60% of the time it's pretty simple and I can figure it out in under an hour. No problem

The other 40% of the time it usually goes on 2+ hours to figure out the issue and with those cases you can only test what you can test (going back to my radiator/thermostat analogy). You may have indeed had a failed pump and check valves but there could have been more. You decided to take the diagnosis and run with it and maybe something else was faulty that couldn't be tested at the time?

Can you take it back for a revaluation? Most shops wouldn't have a problem if you have spent $$$ there but you taking the diag and running might not go over well with them.

Yes but had you had the work done there and after the repairs were made, having there still be an issue they would still be on the hook. They are not now. You were diagnosed and took the car. If there were more problems after that its out of ther hands quite literally. They gave you their diag and direction but didn't promise the fix if you performed it yourself since you didn't do the diagnosis personally.
