I don't see full electric getting my attention until a next gen battery is utilized. Range, especially with respect to towing, is the main detractor for me. I'd be all over a plug in hybrid with ~75 miles of on board electric range and the 3.0L diesel coupled to a generator to keep batteries topped up and motors humming when range is exceeded or towing. Tune the engine to run at a fixed RPM that has been optimized for efficiency.

I'd like to have my cake and eat it too, please.
Today the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the BMW X5's both have a PHEV (plug in hybrid's) option which get just under 40 mile all electric range then gasoline like a regular car after the battery is empty. Per tank they effectively get 50mpg in a mid sized suv with 300+hp. Neither of those options use the gas engine to charge the batteries, only plug in.

Will we use it for long trips, nope.
Will we use it for towing, nope.
Will we ever charge it someplace other then home, nope.
This is why we've had an EV in our garage for about 5 years. We currently have a Kia Niro EV in our garage that gets 240 miles on a full charge. We pretty much use it for everything (running errands, taking 1 or 2 kids to doctor/school, going to work, etc.) The only time we use our other vehicle (Subaru Ascent) is when we are taking trips or going out to dinner with the entire family. Unfortunately that Subaru is a little too small now when I have to take the full crew and grandparents.

I've been waiting for an allocation on a Yukon XL diesel but sometimes I'm really questioning myself. A $70K - $80K vehicle which will basically be sitting in the garage most of the time. But I know as the family grows we will need the larger vehicle more often, so I figure I might as well hang in there.

The Cybertruck's 500mile range will be perfectly adequate for me as I've taken maybe 4 trips in 6 years longer than that.
Plus, I can put 300 miles in it at a super-charging station in an hour.
Just find a super-charger near a lunch stop... problem solved.

Remember, range specified is from 100% battery to a dead battery. You will be constantly reminded to keep your battery between 20% and 80%. That's 40% of the range OUT THE WINDOW to start with. The range is tested with ALL accessories off, air conditioning (-15%), heater (-20%), lights (-6%), Daytime Running Lights (-2%), radios (-0.6%), all OFF. To further complicate matters, governments will be mandating Internet connected car chargers at home. This way, they can, and WILL, shut off your car charger remotely at night or at other times when there's a lack of electrical power. Imagine arriving home with a 20% battery charge only to find out that government regulators have shut your charger off remotely. A good solution is to own 2 electric cars, one "available" for charging, and another one to drive.

There is some truth to what you are saying, but it's wrapped into one big sensationalist shit burger.
EVs, particularly Teslas, are very easy to live with. If you are driving cross-country all the time, or don't have access to charging at home, they aren't really for you.

But, for most people, they win out handily.

Where has “the government” been considering this?

We own a mach e gt and owned Teslas before including a model 3 performance. You lose a ton of range at interstate speeds. Anything 70mph or higher drastically reduces range. I'm not sure why more people don't talk about this. For in town it's fine but long distance at highway speeds you need 500 miles of nominal range so you get 370ish at those speeds. 300 miles nominal will get you about 170 to 200 at interstate speeds. Take that into consideration !

it's going to go far far beyond that, that's just a piece of the pie, just think how much gas tax they get every day do you think the government is going to give that up? lol
if you think for one minute you are going to save any money driving electric think again, it may be so now but it will change, your going to be tracked and recorded, they are going to control all traffic. then the plan down the road is you won't even own a vehicle you will just be a money tree
legislation for some of this is already being tried, google is your friend (for now). AI will either makes us better or it will kill us.
you might think i'm joking or lost my mind..... not a chance

Um what ? They already track everything you do with your cell phone and social media. Yeah gas tax is a thing but they could just make a electric tax. Electric cars are extremely simple. iCE vehicles are much more complex. If anything we are going backwards from a tech standpoint.

Not sure what point you are trying to make.
