My Tahoe is getting up on the mileage, reaching that 200k mark very soon. I know these engines/transmissions don't last forever so I want to get a game plan together for a rebuild/upgrade. I have a local transmission shop that I fully trust in doing the trans rebuild, but as far as the engine goes I can do that myself. I just am curious how many guys have done cam upgrades, bolt-ons, and a tune? What kind of HP numbers? Can I use a handheld tuner for this kind of upgrade? I used to build Honda's and I had a few turbo cars, but the GM world is out of my realm. Any help or guidance would be great, I figure I'll buy parts as I can and get ready for the inevitable. Thanks!

These engines routinely go to 400k without a rebuild if they’re well maintained. If it’s not burning an excessive amount of oil you should be good for another 100k easily. I added a supercharger, cam, headers, etc at 150 k on my 02 Denali and fully expect another 150 k out of it at least. But if you want to rebuild the motor there’s plenty of things you can do to add hp, it just depends on how far you want to go. Your plans for the engine need to be taken into consideration when building the trans. The 4l60 needs to be built to handle the extra hp because it will be the weak link, believe me I know. I had one of the best builders in the country do mine to the tune of $3200 and I’ve broken it twice in 3 years so I’m going to upgrade it to their best. You can swap in a 4l80 but it takes quite a bit to make it happen. You also will want a different torque converter with appropriate stall speed for your application. But 400 hp is easily achieved naturally aspirated and a good 4l60 will probably handle it but if you go much higher you’ll probably run into problems like me.

A reliable 400hp is the mark I was looking to get to so I'm glad to hear that much. If the funds are there I could possibly be looking into the superhcarger option, once this thing gets a new engine/trans it'll be a garage queen anyway. For now I'll just be saving my pennies for parts. Sounds like you may be a good person to bounce ideas off of at least. Thanks!
