I had my first experience with CarPlay last week in the rental. It was unintentional- I just plugged my phone in to charge and all this cool shit started happening. Do want.

When you rent a car, do you ever look at the names of phones that people have sync’d to the car? I have seen some very interesting ones. I always try and delete my phone before returning as I don’t know what kind of contact info gets saved.

It won’t save anything except the name of your phone. Apple is probably the safest ecosystem out there.

I’ve used it on and off for a couple years but always hated the fact you had to plug in the phone so I fell in the habit of using Bluetooth because it’s wireless. Until the latest HU I installed in The Beast- wireless CarPlay, finally available in only a few aftermarket units and not even in any American OEM cars yet. It’s in a few European luxury cars so far but that’s it. It connects via WiFi for a high enough data transfer. I love it, now when I get in I don’t even have to take the phone out of my pocket. Everything I need to do with my phone is available on the HU touchscreen. And it’s immediate too, it’s up and running as fast as the radio would come on. Super highly recommended.

I noticed the names in the list when I synched my phone but didn't really read through them. I don't think it saves contact info. I think it just accesses them if you permit it to.

This explains why the awesomeness didn't occur when I went to synch my phone. I realized it four days later during the drive home when I plugged it into the USB. I recall your reports of CarPlay in your thread and, between that and this, I'm really wanting it. I really like that basic Pioneer touchscreen I put in the Tahoe not long ago because it had just that- the basics I use and wanted. But now I've tasted blood...

I find that I don't use CP really much at all now. I thought it was cool in the beginning but there isn't much it does for me that the head unit (in my non-Tahoe) doesn't already do while using Bluetooth or plugging the phone in. But I'm sure it may benefit others who use it differently.

My first experience with CP was the exact same as yours. Plugged my phone in to a rental that had it.

Yeah I think people who drive more than me benefit from it. I typically ignore my phone once I start driving and I rarely use Nav, though when I do the factory nav seems to have worked just fine.
