and today is an engine cleaning and assembly day!

Wife ended up waking me up early yesterday morning, so i worked on the hoemare until i needed to sign into work.
Got the transmission pan pulled, and then the valve body.

I was happy to see no clutch material in the pan!
might have had just a little, but I did notice what might have been light slipping before i parked her.

I also noticed a headgasket available that would drop my static cr to 10.1
gets me down into the realm of regular fuel...

but then i sat down and did some math.
Assuming premium is just 30 cents more, that's about what $8 more per fuel up vs regular.

And assuming i would lose my precious lazy man low end power, that in turn grants me good fuel economy...
yeah, fk it, I'm sticking with 10.3:1 :jester:

and i'm seriously thinking about pulling the transmission while it's sitting there ready to drop out.
Going back and forth on it with my self.

One side, i can have the hoe back together pretty quickly at this point.
Other side, if i rebuild the transmission and replace all of the bearings, seals, pistons, and clutches.
Include all of the upgrades.
I should be problem free, assuming i don't fk it up and end up getting really good at pulling the transmission in turn.

Mostly new hoemare at that point.
:yaoface2:

I did some rough estimates on prices to do a full rebuild for just parts.
Right around $800 +/-
Since i already have a brand new pump on hand, otherwise add like $400 to that price.

But that would be with the upgraded 4-5-6 drum with the tig weld around the ring that cracks, and the Sonnax HD piston kit.
$400 right there. :jester:

Much thinking to do.
but waiting to pull the pump first.
If i see damage in the pump, then I'll tear it down either way.
If the pump is ok, then i get to do more thinking.
Do the trans now. You'll thank me later.

the money makes me want to hold back.
but there is a very good chance i'm going to go for it.
been reading up and watching videos covering the basics, upgrades, checks, and of course confirming everything is gtg before final assembly (air checks).

I also noticed a bit of end play, but it's possible the new pump will take care of that.
there is a plastic bushing that goes in with the pump that's supposed to take care of that.

But the end play also suggests I might need/want to replace some of those cute little flat thrust type of roller bearings (I cant spell torrenton or whatever they are called).
Nearly 200k on this unit, and I might want to take a close look at the rear support junk while it's apart.

Ugg!

and if I do the transmission, I'll see if I can't break out an old cell phone for pictures.
transmission fluid on the hands is a bad thing for electronics...

Although my little dewalt impact seemed to not mind it too much.
Sure, it smoked a few times, but that was just the cleaning action of the ATF getting in all of the parts. ;)

You are braver that I am for sure taking on that 6L80. I built my motor in my Tahoe, but I'm not about to mess with my 6L80. I've rebuilt TH350, TH400, and even 4L60's... But the 6 speed has clutch to clutch type of operation, and setting the tolerances during the rebuilt are far more crucial.
I built my engine with plans to have a supercharger on it, but when I built my engine I knew my 165K 6L80 would not be happy. So far it's held up to the 100 extra HP just being NA, but it's days are numbered as it's going all sorts of weird stuff. On top of the 4-5-6 drum and other goodies I read about the 6L80, I'm researching using the 6 pinion input planet from a 6L90. The 6L80 has a 4 pinion planet, but the size of the planet is the same. Now the rear planet is way different between them and can't be shared.

Looks like it was an option on the SLT trim. Curious if that is a doable mod. @Doubeleive @iamdub @ anyboddy else - any thoughts?

" is there a way to add adjustable pedals to say my '07 Tahoe that doesn't have them?"
Yup sure was my slt has them and I love them. I also got an appointment at the dealership to get my heated seats programmed hopefully doesn't cost me an arm but most likely not. Next up after that heated steering wheel.

Wife is telling me to just do it too.

I also need to add about $200 for tools.
big one is that snap ring plier thing...
Duck bill pliers is what we have for 4l60. Get an eBay stand that bolts to engine stand. Really helps. And don't cheap out on the spring compressor. I think we first had a $20 job and it was a pos. Got the $100 one, can't remember brand. Worth it. Also, just cheap lip seal tools. No need for the expensive ones. They break just like the cheap ones. Good dial indicator for end play and some feeler gauges for clearances and you'll be good. I'm sure they have a few other specialty tools that I'm not thinking of or aware of. They say the 6 speed is one of the easiest transmissions out there to r&r (some may disagree but it's all just nuts and bolts to me. Do one, do them all). Post lots of pics and I wish you the best of luck!
