So as it stands I have just about all the parts I need to replace what is thout to be the head gasket. Both head gaskets will be do as well as every gasket above that. New valve seals were also include in the gasket kit. New head and intake bolts have also arrived as well as all the coolant and oil that will be changed out in the process with the oil being changed to synthetic Mobil 1 and a K&N filter.

Unfortunately the major gasket set was damaged in shipping and the head and lower intake gaskets are not usable so it is going to be a few more days till I begin. I do not want to pull it apart until I have a complete undamaged gasket set because the truck can still be driven to some extent if needed.

Nevertheless I thought I would start with some picture of what new gaskets look like for reference.

Well I just order a replacement plug.

I think I will drain it the fast way by lower rad hose. I have a big drain pan. I will save the new plug in case I have to remove the rad one at which point drill out the old.

cooling fan assembly, P/S Pump, alternator and a/c compressor with associated brackets, main engine harnesses and coolant(little messy) all cleared out. Hopefully manifolds, dizzy and heads tomorrow with pics to follow.

The intake manifold and dizzy is out. Manifold shows new injector tubes installed. right cylinder head is out(the one that was the problem). Nice whopping hunk of gasket missing and probably floating in the converter now. This is what broke and start missing at all times and pinging. Left head which has no issues will come off Tuesday and the two plus lower manifold will head to the engine shop for cleaning and inspection.

And for an original engine that dizzy gear is looking pretty damn good. no build up of carbon accept the in the cylinders.

Looks like I may have caught an upcoming oil problem on the rear of the bank as well.

The large coolant passage you see between the two cylinders was only there after I put my finger in it. Up to that point it was closed up. It is looking like the cooling system was neglected before I got it. I used a chemical cleaner and new dex-cool just before this happened and what came out yesterday looked like watered down dexron. So it will go thru some more heavy chemical cleaning and back flushing through-out the rest of this year. More tommorrow.

left cylinder head out today hopefully both will be at the engine shop tomorrow. Like before some coolant passages were closed from flow until I poked them. So I am probably going to the the water pump as well as it seems not to flow well enough to keep some holes open. All the cylinders seem to look well with no damage. just a little carbon where the rings don't touch the walls up top. So far things are looking dirty but good.
