I have a 03 Tahoe 5.3L(Not Flex Fuel). Has around 186k miles on it. My dad has been putting 10W-40 oil before handing it to me.
I researched on AllData website and found out my truck needs 2 Dexos 5W-30 oil.
Is it fine if I switch and start putting 5W-30 dexos 2 oil ? I've read that the W now stands for "Winter" not "Weight".

Good article ^

Most everyone has an opinion on oil. But it depends on how you drive, where you live, etc. Older mileage vehicles scare some people away from synthetic oil, but not me. I made the switch in my 01 Hoe to Pennz Ultra Platinum 5W30 and haven't looked back. I could probably go up to a 10W30 with my location and the fact that I'm coming up on 150k miles but it's doing fine. Most places you read about it always list price as the biggest drawback, but if you figure in extended change intervals and that it does protect a smidge better....it's worth it to me. Besides, you can pick up the Pennz from Walmart for nearly the same price as conventional oil. Hell, I still run the Amsoil Signature Series 10W30 in my DSM.

Good luck researching and deciding. The most important factor is keeping it changed ;)

I run 5w30 in my 160k mile 04 6.0 Escalade I'd stick to the recommended weight, I use Castrol GTX HM and a Wix or Napa Gold filter

the W still stands for weight and the 5w does mean the oil acts as a 5 weight in colder temperatures. That is because an engine is harder to turn over in the winter when the oil is cold and thickens. During the hot summer days the oil is nearer 30 weight (5w-30). You can look up the exact temp specs for any given oil. In the midwest I run Walmart Supertech synthetic 5w-30 in all of my Suvs and Truck.
Engines are: 99 5.7L. (2) 03 5.3L and a 05 6.0L. My 5.7L has around 275k on it now. I got it when it had 82K on it. 6.0L has just under 300K and the 5.3L's have 200k and 165k. Seems to be doing just fine.

Exactly, no need in wasting money on the placebo effect
