Dealer says the rear main seal is the culprit after all. Showed me in the rack. Guess it'll leak until I get rid of it or need a new transmission or I find a cheap mechanic to do it. Oil pan gasket is leakin slightly also. Quote was 1100 bucks to do both.

2WD or 4WD? For 4WD that's not a bad price. For 2WD the estimate should be about $900.

It's not bad but the rear main is a 5.9 hr job for the 4L60E (5.3L) and 5.2 hours for the 4L80E (6.0L).

Oil pan shows 2.0 hours so about 8 hours total in just labor. At an average $100/hr that's 800. A rear main seal kit and oil pan gasket/oil should be about $100-125 customer price.

$925. Is what most shops would do it for around here (before tax as your quote would be also). I'd shop around. Or get them to do a full synthetic oil change or 3. ;)

Yep. Gonna live with it for while. I figure I'll need a tranny at some point anyway. Or until I find a mechanic I trust on the side.

If you haven't already switch to high mileage (synthetic blend) or full on synthetic. It may swell your rear main a bit to lessen the leak.

To be honest, since your truck ie 2WD, that 6.0 hour labor time is time to remove, replace the seal and install. If you have some basic tools and a jack and jackstands, you could easily do it yourself. There's nothing much to it. I can have one out on the floor in 1 hour in the shop so i figure 2 hours on the ground. Get a buddy or two to help you do it and it's done on a few hours.

The seal itself is under $20.

It'll take me two hours to get under the truck and 2 more to get a helper.

Does this look like a camshaft position sensor leak? Valley? I’ve changed the oil pressure switch. Am I crazy or what... I don’t think the rear main is the culprit here...looks like a lot of oil to me way up here.

Thoughts?
