So my truck suddenly developed a grinding noise from the brakes. At first I thought it might be rust build up since i have been letting this truck sit lately because I have a lot of miles left on a lease that goes back soon.

I drove the Tahoe to work today 30 miles and figured if it was rust then the noise would go away but it didn’t so I stopped at a shop down the road from my work and they confirmed I need rear brakes and rotors. It’s odd because there was no warning or grinding or squealing before I let the Tahoe sit.

Anyways it’s a 2004 Tahoe z71 4x4

The mechanic just said to make sure I order ceramic. I want to get something of quality. He said I can do all four or wait on the fronts since they have some life. I think I’ll just do the rears for now

Does anyone have any recommendations? Part numbers would be great and I didn’t ask if calipers need replacing. Not sure when or why calipers would need to be replaced

I would just get AC Delco replacements. No need to do anything over the top if you aren't having any issues with the stock stuff other than it being worn out.

Rotors
ACDELCO 18A1412AC
Pads
ACDELCO 17D834CH - I assumed your truck was 4x4. They are not the same between 2wd and 4wd.

I don't live in the rust belt, but I have heard of rust issues which would require the calipers to be replaced. If you're not replacing the calipers, make sure you use the new hardware that comes with the pads and grease your slide pins. Check out your parking brake parts while you're in there. Good time to adjust/replace the shoes if necessary.

Thanks for quick reply. I appreciate the part numbers, I’m about to order these today. Is ac Delco better than Monroe? Also the truck has been in Michigan for 5 years now. Came from Arizona. I’m hoping the calipers are alright but mechanic said to just go ahead and order the pads and rotors and if he sees that the calipers are seized then we can have them delivered same day

They are AC Delco parts, all new and not reman calipers and the ceramic pads and all the hardware. Bolt on and clean/lube all contact points and slide areas, keep your greasy finger prints off the rotors, use brake clean on the rotors and wipe with a clean rag, bleed the fuid and go play. Break in/seat in the pads. There are you tube videos to help with that because is lengthy to explain. Another name for it is burnishing the pads.

It’s the entire kit: calipers, rotors and pads + severe duty.

ETA: Though it looks like that’s a kit for a RWD, and OP said 4x4.

Real quick question, maybe a dumb one but I found one set of the pads on ebay. Ac delco with the same model number but on the box it’s stamped July 2013. Should those be fine or should I just buy one from rock auto since it would probably be a later production or should the production year not really matter? Their like 41.00 on rock auto and I found the one set on eBay for 23.50. Last set of them

Monroe is definitely not my "go to" brand for brake parts. Really for anything anymore. Had bad luck with Monroe struts on my commuter car and had to take it apart multiple times with an alignment each time. Some people may have had a different experience than I did.
