Yeah, I know. I can answer my own question.
The answer is because GM is cheap and always looking for ways to delete useful stuff and raise prices as an added bonus.
My 1995 Chevy pickup has an underhood light that comes on when I raise the hood, and a separate corded light that can be turned on and off and removed to reposition the light to where it might be needed. I just had to go into the house to get a flashlight so I could find what I was looking for under the hood of the 2010 Tahoe. Geez, those stinkers in GM "management" just keep stripping useful stuff off of the production line, in this case two underhood lights.
