For what it's worth, the engine on my 2015 Suburban 5.3 took a crap on me last June. The transmission was on its way out during that time as well. After lots of research, I determined that instead of replacing with what I had, I would purchase a fully dressed engine and transmission together and have it swapped in.

I sourced a GM L8T 6.6 liter engine AND transmission for $7200. This engine and transmission was fully dressed with all accessory components, catalytic converters, ECM/TCM, etc. I had an independant shop do the install. My labor was $6500, but that labor also included replacing several steering and suspension parts while it was in the shop.

All said, I was roughly $13k for an engine and transmission that had only 5 miles on it.

How could this apply to you?

Well there are PLENTY of GM L8T engines on Ebay with under 10... yes TEN miles on them. These engines bolt right up to the 6 speed, 8 speed, AND 10 speed transmissions. These L8T 6.6 liter engines are made without the cylinder deactivation junk, and in most cases these L8T 6.6 engines can be found for CHEAPER than the 6.2. Another bonus... it runs on 87 octane while putting down 401 HP and 464 TQ.

I have a fairly detailed build thread on this forum that you're more than welcome to take a look at.

I know its a lot to think about but I am a firm believer that knowledge is power.

Also, if you're looking to spend 22k... just buy my rig for 22k and sell off your Yukon LOL!!
Huh, this is interesting and does give me another angle to think about. I was always a little leery about buying anything off of ebay. But it sounds like it should be something I consider.

unless that thing is in titz condition spending more than half it's value on a motor is crazy, that's why I mentioned used that would save you a chunk of money
it's worth maybe $30k in working condition to a dealer who has the option of offering financing to buyer.
or leave it on the shady part of town with the windows down, wait a couple days and report it stolen lol
then even if it hasn't been pilfered, claim they blew the engine up. statue of limitations is up so admittedly I may have or may not have done this myself.

Lol, I may or may not have had the same thought about windows down. It won't start at all so I'm not able to take a pleasure ride to "that" side of town anyway.

mine was maybe taken when I left it running with the key in it to go in a store real quick came out and it was gone, this explains a lot
#was not carjacked, #ignition wasn't destroyed
just because a vehicle was reported stolen doesn't mean they will find it 5 minutes later on the other side of town........

We drove about 2 hours and at the end of our trip heard a winding or squeaking sound coming from the front of the car. At that point we were doing about 30-35 mph with in town. Got to my daughter's house had it idling tried to listen for the noise with the hood open and heard nothing. The car sat for a few hours and then we got back in it and within about 10 minutes I heard a quick squeak, air conditioner went off and lost complete power to the vehicle. When I mean power, I mean driving, I hit the accelerator and nothing happened. For a few minutes of us being stranded on the side of the road, the electrical system still worked, until it didn't, and the battery went dead. My initial thoughts were that it's the alternator that went, although no dashboard lights came on at all. We had it towed to the local Chevy dealer in Wilmington North Carolina and they are telling me that it needs a new motor, to the tune of $22,000. I asked for codes and they're still trying to gather those for me because the technician had left early for the day.

I had a few questions for him specifically how a mechanical engine failure would have drained the battery so fast and not one engine light came on. There was no knocking no dinging no smoke no overheating no smells.... nothing. Something doesn't seem right to me. I'd also add that we just had the hundred thousand mile maintenance done on it so we were expecting this to be clear sailing for the next few years. Anybody have any suggestions or thoughts? We are in Cary North Carolina right outside Raleigh if it helps.
GM used to have rebuilt engines and transmissions that were a fraction of the price and came with a year warr. From there a scrap yard for a used engine and you can get a 3-6 month warranty.
You have a 2018 don't put in a new engine.

So that's all they use now are reconditioned engines. So believe it or not the quote for $16+k is actually a reconditioned motor. $9,000 for the motor $6,000 for labor and a thousand and change for taxes. I was actually told that they have five to six vehicles waiting for the 6.2 engine replacements from model year 21 up.

lots of options out there for less money, i'm guessing they just do not have any "new" l86 available right now
powertrain products doesn't show any in stock, but fraser does 3yr unlimited mile standard, 5yr optional $5400+core (1200)

You know with all of this information about delays for the 6.2's I wonder if that's why they cost so much so maybe if the dealer ends up putting a 5.3 in it it would be a lot less. There was a statement made that if I put a 6.6 in it which I believe is the same engine just bored out differently, it would not be covered under warranty because it's not the correct engine for the vehicle. I wonder if that would be the same thing for the 5.3 considering it originally had a 6.2.
