Also this setup isn't like the old distributor and carb style. The way it's setup you will just fight the ecm if you didn't get it meshed correctly with the cam gear. Even if you could turn the dizzy 360° you would be spinning it for hrs before you found the spot.

would like to add that the tdc is correct but the intake and exhaust valve must both be closed so if you saw the intake valve closing the moment it is fully closed the next tdc should be at the top of the compression stroke and that is tdc firing for the dizzy reference point.

That dizzy I replaced on my tahoe I actually took a pair of channel locks on the old one and twisted it backwards a bit so the good side of the teeth mated with the two and lined them up perfectly. Dropped right in

I tried to adjust the cap but I seem to be hitting something. Is there a aftermarket cap I can buy that has the spark plug points facing up instead of to the side so I can turn it more.

How long would it take to take out distributor, put engine to top dead center ,install distributor and then adjust it

I just did it twice in less than an hr on a 2000 k2500. As sunlit commented back a few replys setting that notch to the mark on the picture i supplied will be cyl at top dead center however you wont know if your on tdc of the exhaust or intake stroke. For that you could take a valve cover off that side so you can tell which valve is open. Might be a good option for you as trying to start it on the wrong stroke can be quite a wake up call (hence why i had to do it twice).

You might need a flat screw driver about 12 inches long to position your oil pump back in place. On my tahoe i got lucky and the old distributor was on the right teeth just not rotated correctly so that one dropped right in. The k2500 was not quite so easy so easy as the motor i was given to put in it did not have a distributor in it. So during the install rotating the engine to get everything bolted back up threw the oil pump slot and the cam off. Under the gear of the dizzy you will see a flat spade that has to line up with the slot on the oil pump shaft when you reinstall.
