Finished the 5K service yesterday.

Popped off both rocker covers to inspect. Not sure what's up with some of the rockers being darker. They're the originals and maybe they were on other cylinders. But, I swear I kept them all in their original positions. It appears to just be oil staining as it wiped off. :

These are the 3/8" push rods. They were really close, but cleared when I tested them on the stand. Apparently, they still clear with the engine at 6,000 RPM. Minimizing flex is the point of fat rods, right? :

I wanted to swap in sturdier rockers since I'm running the originals. Back in 2010ish, I had some ~20K-mile rockers fitted with a Comp trunnion upgrade kit. I never finished that build, sold the motor and those rockers sat on a shelf for 9+ years. A couple years ago, I put them in my brother's truck since his were damaged from loss of oil pressure. Not long after that, I stumbled across a bunch of old horror stories of how that Comp kit was failing- the trunnions were getting chewed up by the bearings, possibly from improper hardening. The issue seemed to be from around that time period. Playing it safe, I swapped 'em for some new OEM ones I had slated for mine. He only ran 'em for about 10K miles. Yesterday, I took a couple apart to inspect and saw what I believe is the beginning stages of the aforementioned failure.

The top/low-load side appears fine and you can see the band from where the needle bearings ride:

The bottom/high load side is definitely worse. There was some pits (ignore the paper towel fibers) in the bottom centers that I could feel when I lightly drug a razor blade across them:

I decided to not use them. I'll be getting something else, if not just another new OEM set.

I remember reading a few years ago about the Comp rocker downgrade failing people with mild cams, it's a good thing you caught that early! I have a set from CHE which is supposed to be "the best" but I will be inspecting them when I pull the heads this weekend.

Every set of OEM rockers I've seen one bank is always stained worse than the other so you may have gotten some mixed up. I looked into the different color causes and the general consensus was that it has to do with the PVC being on the driver side.

I have the BTR trunnion upgrade on mine. Not sure if they are good or POS. I just bought what my brother told me to.

I don't even know what I was looking for when I stumbled upon that info when I did. They felt fine and I couldn't feel any slack, so I figured those failures were with high pressure springs on donkey díck cams turning 7,000 RPM. So I was gonna clean 'em up and roll with it. Glad I took some apart!

That makes sense about the rocker color. Two are darker, then two are light, then two more are dark, etc. I must've mixed 'em up.

I'm actually looking at their offerings in another tab. If I can get genuine OEM rockers, I'd be fine with that. I'm running Z06 springs and only going to 6K. My cam has only a little more intake duration, same exhaust duration but .005" less lift than the Z06 cam. OEM rockers should be perfectly fine.
