All of our local garbage trucks are now fully made with HIDs and LEDs... Pretty funny seeing them drive around. But they are OEM lights and DOT approved. Remember, HIDs don't have to be in projectors, for example my 04 Escalade.

I'm glad to see this thread still going.

Yup, in the early days of HIDs, many car manufacturers tried like crazy to figure out to make hids work in hid reflector housings, because I said before, it'd be a lot cheaper for them to figure that out instead of spending millions in projector design and optics R&D. Ultimately they all gave up on it cause they just couldn't get them to work right and one by one they dropped the idea and stuck with projectors.

I have to admit, when I was younger and the PnP kits came out, I had one. Then I learned the error in my ways and removed it. One day I'll have a retro...

HID's work just fine in reflector housings,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,that were made for them. my '02 E55 had factory HID's in a reflector housing using D2R bulbs and they were damned good. My '09 Avalon Limited has reflector housings with HID's that are also pretty good (execpt for POS failure prone D4R bulbs). Not quite a projector HID, but way better than the halogens in the base Avalon.

Can't wait to get my retrofits from B.G.! I have been flashed with mine but like Modded said, not too many times at all.

Modded, the life cycle thing is a weak excuse! haha..just messin. I plan on keeping my tahoe maybe another year or so and I am still getting them! It is worth it from what I hear.

Do you know of any auto manufacturer that still use hid reflector setups?

It's not a trick question, I actually don't know.

As the cost of projectors comes down, I would think not. Acura has dropped reflector HID's and I think the new Prius and Avalon are now projectors as well. Probably around 2010/2011 were the last unless I'm forgetting something. I believe you are correct on the next gen of GM SUV as well. The spy shots I've seen suggest projectors will finally make it to the Yukon and Tahoe. If that's the case, I can't imagine them going to the trouble and keeping halogen bulbs.
