I have to agree that the assorted 'mechanic-in-a-can' products seldom do you much actual good.

Does anyone else remember when 'lifter tick' was another way to spell 'small block chevy'?

If the bolts are broken below the manifold (which the usually are), you don't have to touch them. If they are sticking out a big past the manifold, you have to knock then down with a Dremel or grinder.

LOL I've never heard that one. Somebody had to work hard for that.

I doesn't just roll off the tongue like Fix Or Replace Daily or Found On Road Dead, does it?

I found a broken bolt front drivers side. Put one of those brackets on and all seems fine after an additional 30k? miles.
When I was reading about this very common issue some recommended replacing the bolts with an OEM bolt kit. The bolts were redesigned and much improved to solve this issue. I guess ARP would also work, I think it uses studs which could make things easier.

So my 5.3L Tahoe with 170k miles has developed a loud lifter tick when the engine is cold. Once warmed up it is totally gone. This has been going on the past few thousand miles, so it may be related to my oil (I had just switched to Lubri-Moly Molygen 5w30). I've run Kreen through the oil twice, so I'm not sure how much more cleaning there is to do with additivies. I did order some AutoRX as that has quite the following on BITOG and I will try that. My last option, before diving really deep, is to spray some Berryman B12 onto the lifters to see if that "frees" them up. Anyone does this before?

Thanks,
Cyrus
Your lifter is ticking until oil gets to it. This has to be fixed quickly to prevent damage to your enginee. Your valley plate has cylinoids that inject oil to govern your lifters. You might have a partially clogged or non functioning cylinoid. If you dont want to rebuild the engine to DOD/AFM delete, I reccomend replacing this part. Another part to also consider is the oil pump. Me- I performed the DOD delete and tuning when I got the dredded collapsed lifter. Quite a proccess.
