Sorry but a "Fumoto"" type of valve beats any plug. Drains oil straight into recycling container in 10 min with not one drop spilled. I'll let my filter take care of any metal fines if they exist.
Agree 100% though think the OP posted this up because you can easily see what metal is floating around in your oil without having to cut up the oil filter.

Agree. Oil flushes out quickly and more complete with OEM plug. Fumoto drain has small opening and can take up to 10 mins to drain. Screw in part of Fumoto is also pretty long and therefore the opening will sit higher in the oil plan...leaving behind more old oil.

While a relatively expensive option, there is a product called "filtermag", which is basically some really strong magnets that attach to the outside of the oil filter. So as the unfiltered oil outside the oil filter pleats flows passed these strong magnets, any ferrous metal would get stuck there, inside the filter. Link below to Summit racing's offering of the various diameter ones. Of course not all wear particles are ferrous metals, but this will do the same job (perhaps a better job), than the magnetic drain plug and still allow you to have a fumoto valve on the drain if you want.

I can promise you that with my valve, I can put 99% of that warm to hot seven quarts in a container in less than 90 seconds.. If it leaves a cup of oil behind, That isn't going to mean a hill of beans. I flip that valve open, change the filter, and by the time I get back to it, it's as dry as it's going to get. On a good day, I can do the whole job in less than 20 minutes.

Just as a point of possible interest, radial aircraft engines have what's called a "chip light". It's a magnet in the oil system, with a wire connected to it, and connected, at the other end, to a warning light in the cockpit.

Along with routine oil analysis, this gives warning of impending internal failures; enough metal on the magnet illuminates the chip light.

I don't think it would be too difficult to rig this in your truck, if you're worried enough.
