don't rely on the idiots here to give you information on what will help. do a LOT of searching and reading on various websites before diving into anything.

for one, basic maintenance will go a long way. and in most cases, anything you buy to help improve mpgs, will be better money spent on gas in the tank. but if you are looking to increase drive-ability, and make it just a better vehicle, there are quite a few things you can do. just do some searching and you will find plenty of mods people have done.

the basics really are going to be intake, exhaust, and tune. stay away from hand held tuners since your a 97 your obd2 which is easily tune-able.

good luck.

what idiots are you referring to and how is a vortec easily programmable with out a hand held or pc based device. things like efi take skill not just thumbs. except those people twiddling their thumbs while waiting for people with skill to program using pc-based systems.choosing a custom tune or handheld unit is dependent on the users needs. his specific requirements may require the use of a hand held unit.

it is best to remove the tb and its electronics from it to get a good thorough dousing of cleaner on it. the pintle of the iac should also be wiped clean. the tps should be left alone. both are held on be torx bit screws. you can use any store bought tb cleaner to use. for the maf use a sensor specific cleaner also available. remove it from the vehicle and hold the sensor with the airflow axis vertical. spray the airflow area only in both directions let it drip dry.

Throttle blade mod, delete silencer box, do fresh tune up (plugs, wires, cap & rotor), seafoam the engine and fuel system, oil change after seafoam with synthetic for basics.

Than you could go for a tuned pcm, exhaust upgrade, cold air intake, and shift kit to make bring it all together.
