I also have a 02 .5.3 Escalade I had lean bank one .. slight rough idle but no smell .. changed the 02 sensors still had the issue … decided to sprayed carb cleaner around the intake and sure Enuff it was leaking … changed it out and I was good …deff could be sometime if vacuum leak

ANOTHER rare bird coming out ?

Yep its not at all uncommon for a 5.3L intake to leak and suck in air screwing up the a/f and leaning it out severely since its unmetered air. Stupid easy way to find the leak is spray just about anything that is flammable around the intake gasket area all the way around the intake and see if the idle increases while you are doing it. This trick actually came from the days of carburetors.

5.3L 2wd Eskie ! Wonder what the production numbers are on that rare bird?
You'd be surprised how many 5.3 Esky's there are. I'd guess somewhere in the ~30% range of all Esky's produced. I base that on the ones I see funneling thru the local PYP's here in CA. Easiest way to ID them as someone said, they do not have the 3 piece engine cover, but instead have the std 4.8/5.3 engine cover. Or an even better way to ID is by looking at the 8th digit of the VIN. A "T" is an LM7 5.3. An "N" is the LQ9 6.0.

The very rare bird Esky is the 6.0 2wd's that were only available in 05-06.
