Damn it, it did it again and I didn't get it on tape. Figures. This time, I got in, started up and I turned down the temp to to 76, hit the AC button and it made the same groaning metallic noise, lasting a few seconds, with a very slight warble to the tone. This was much louder than the first time and the subsequent time.
So, it appears it definitely has something to do with the heat/ac, nothing to do with outside temp, as the first time it was in the 40's and it's about 75 right now.I hope it's something as simple as a computer flash and not a dying compressor. Aside from the noise, everything else works great, AC is super cold, no hiccups or issues at all.
The oil didn't get changed this weekend, hubby did a few chores that got him off the hook.
Bellis, I have this SAME problem occasionally. Maybe once every 8-10 starts. It sounds like a low pitch groan, exactly how you described & lasts maybe 3-4 seconds. It happens even if my ac/heat display is off.
I changed the engine oil from conventional 5w30 to Mobil 1 synthetic 5w30...still does it.
Any Ideas?
Read this thread. And 2 things were realized. 1. I can be of no help but believe it is the compressor and 2. It's truly impossible to keep any thread on topic.
Can you replicate it when you cycle the AC compressor? In the morning start the truck and turn on the AC (defrost should work too) when everything is still cold and see if makes the noise. If it doesn't, cycle it again to activate the compressor clutch when it has warmed up (the truck) and see if it does it then. If you can at least narrow it down to something it'll be much easier to troubleshoot. I'm guessing compressor or compressor clutch based on what the events today.
Changing your oil isn't going to help.... If changing the oil can make a noise like that come or go, you have bigger worries...
I'm half tempted to email the original owner and ask them exactly why they got rid of it. I have the title and looked them up on facebook...but I think it might be weird to do that. Then again, if they dumped it for a reason, other than the warranty had just gone out, it might be worthwhile. It's not like they have anything to lose, they sold it to a dealer.
The sound is annoying and a little embarrassing when it happens, but I never really thought of it as something serious...I hope its not. It almost sounds like some part needs a little more lubrication. Maybe one of the pulleys the serpentine belt drives???
Props if u decide to contact the original owner...I would be too embarrassed.
I've had buyers of my previous rides call me before asking me questions. It's not that bad. It's not like you're asking them over to dinner would be a good move
My guess is AC compressor but that's just a guess since I haven't heard it or been there when it happened. Definitely seems linked to the AC in some fashion, though.
Brain fart......could it be your fan that blows air in the cabin??? This noise could be loud inside but possible not be heard outside, though
Its definitely an outside sound from the engine bay. Does the AC compressor turn on at start-up even if the climate control is off? The sound has happened even when my climate control was totally off.
