Damn it, it did it again and I didn't get it on tape. Figures. This time, I got in, started up and I turned down the temp to to 76, hit the AC button and it made the same groaning metallic noise, lasting a few seconds, with a very slight warble to the tone. This was much louder than the first time and the subsequent time.

So, it appears it definitely has something to do with the heat/ac, nothing to do with outside temp, as the first time it was in the 40's and it's about 75 right now.I hope it's something as simple as a computer flash and not a dying compressor. Aside from the noise, everything else works great, AC is super cold, no hiccups or issues at all.

The oil didn't get changed this weekend, hubby did a few chores that got him off the hook.

Can you replicate it when you cycle the AC compressor? In the morning start the truck and turn on the AC (defrost should work too) when everything is still cold and see if makes the noise. If it doesn't, cycle it again to activate the compressor clutch when it has warmed up (the truck) and see if it does it then. If you can at least narrow it down to something it'll be much easier to troubleshoot. I'm guessing compressor or compressor clutch based on what the events today.

Changing your oil isn't going to help.... If changing the oil can make a noise like that come or go, you have bigger worries...

Read this thread. And 2 things were realized. 1. I can be of no help but believe it is the compressor and 2. It's truly impossible to keep any thread on topic.

Bellis, I have this SAME problem occasionally. Maybe once every 8-10 starts. It sounds like a low pitch groan, exactly how you described & lasts maybe 3-4 seconds. It happens even if my ac/heat display is off.

I changed the engine oil from conventional 5w30 to Mobil 1 synthetic 5w30...still does it. :emotions122:

Any Ideas?

Yeah, I really doubt oil is the culprit. The 8-10 starts is about right, of course I am a woman, therefore all I do is "drive around and spend money," so I do a lot of starting and stopping.

1. I think it may be it, however, after youtubing noises for ac clutch and compressor, it does not sound even remotely close. I really hope the first of the three mechanics who checked it over, is wrong. I do not want to drop $1500 on it within the first few weeks.

2. You are very right, sir, but it does keep things interesting in the interim.

I've tried cycling it and it does nothing. It appears it's a random draw, sometimes it does, most of the time it doesn't. I will note, that it seems my fan is kicking on and I don't really think it should. My temp is right at 210 (tranny 145) and it sounds like it's been running in 100+ weather, fan cycling and running. It might be normal, it may be because I'm listening for anything to give away the problem. I really don't know. I'm not used to this truck and it's idiosyncrasies yet, so I can't say. But it's worrisome with it not even being hot yet (and yes, coolant is normal).

I haven't said anything to hubby yet, as I know the response; "Then quit driving it."

I'm half tempted to email the original owner and ask them exactly why they got rid of it. I have the title and looked them up on facebook...but I think it might be weird to do that. Then again, if they dumped it for a reason, other than the warranty had just gone out, it might be worthwhile. It's not like they have anything to lose, they sold it to a dealer.

The sound is annoying and a little embarrassing when it happens, but I never really thought of it as something serious...I hope its not. It almost sounds like some part needs a little more lubrication. Maybe one of the pulleys the serpentine belt drives???

Props if u decide to contact the original owner...I would be too embarrassed.

YES! Exactly my thoughts, it's as if something isn't getting enough oil right away and thus the groan, then it does and all is well.

Considering it's done this 3 times in a week, I'm moderately concerned. More so concerned that it's going to cost me $$$$ to fix it, and that I might not have a working ac if it is a compressor/clutch.

I'm going to stew on the emailing, but I'll probably do it. I really don't give a shit, they don't know me and I don't know them, who cares? Aside from that fact it's a little creepy, I don't have anything to lose.

I've had buyers of my previous rides call me before asking me questions. It's not that bad. It's not like you're asking them over to dinner :) would be a good move :waytogo:

My guess is AC compressor but that's just a guess since I haven't heard it or been there when it happened. Definitely seems linked to the AC in some fashion, though.

Brain fart......could it be your fan that blows air in the cabin??? This noise could be loud inside but possible not be heard outside, though

Its definitely an outside sound from the engine bay. Does the AC compressor turn on at start-up even if the climate control is off? The sound has happened even when my climate control was totally off.

As far as I know it does with remote start.
