They could be different models of the 246(E) because of the change around 2002/03 or one could be a NP246E and the other a NP241. There should be a round tag on the rear of the case. It will be completely opposite side of the front driveshaft output shaft. Near the fluid fill plug. The model number of the case will be on that round tag.
It will look like the following pic.

Look on your RPO code sticker It will have NR4, NP8 or ?? under the N codes. whats yours? What is the vehicle. I got that you have a 2002 something in the title. And the donor vehicle was a 04 Yukon XL SLT which likely has a NP246E.

What buttons do you have on the dash of your 2002 for the Tcase? 4hi,4lo,N,2WD or Auto4wd,4hi,4lo,N,2WD or ??????

You likely have a NP246 (Notice I didnt say NP246E) which is RPO NP8 on your RPO stricker in your glove box or center console storage area. In 03 GM went with the NP246E (E for enhanced) and made some changes.
The yukon XL 04 had either a NP246E (also called a RPO Code NP8 but not the same as a pre 2003 year NP246) or a BW4482 (AWD). Easiest way to rule that out is look at the 04 Tcase. Does it have a place for a shift motor to be installed or already have one on it? If it does then it is a NP246E. If it does not then it is a AWD Tcase. (Option NR4 RPO Code)

IIRC 98-02 is the interchange. 03 and up no dice.
i have seen parts listed like before but gm had there head up there butt during that changeover so when i had my 00 I learned pretty quickly to order for 01, the 03+ stuff looks pretty close but won't fit, I was told some of the 03+ transmissions can be swapped if the bell housing is swapped or something? just what i was told once
