Zed, I am not sure what he is changing. After we talked to for quite a while we kinda came to the conclusion that I should get it checked out. I took it to a new mechanic my friend uses and he seemed like he almost instantly new what the possibilities could be. He said (to the best that I can remember)the transfer case sensor, or the driveshaft not connecting all the way. Possibly the fluids are low or need greased. Just a guess without looking at all of it. I'm taking it in wednesday to get it fixed.

So after discussing it with a friend on the way to dinner, he said, well does it do it when you put it in 2wd? Soo, I put it in 2wd and ......perfect. No slipping, nothing. Drives just like when I bought it. So I put it back into auto, stopped at the next stop sign, and it started slipping again. So I think it could be the sensor in the transfer case. It works fine when in 2wd, but right when I put it in auto, it starts acting up.

Does this seem like the logical reason why it would be doing this?

So you drive around in Auto mode most of the time? The transfer case should be a chain driven type (NPXXX) so I cannot see where the slip would be. It could be another sensor that is sensing slip and trying to allocate power to the front wheels, and that transition seems like slip.

I will try Auto mode in mine today to see if there is a difference.

In any case good luck and let us know how it turns out.

I've always driven it in auto since I got it in late feb. Always seemed like it drove fine to me. Should I not be? I thought that is what you are supposed to drive in and it will shift into 4wd when needed. I just figured that the sensor that switches it over to 4wd when needed could be broken and that is why it slips. Either way its gonna go to the shop and get fixed. I am having them check everything and change the trans fluid and refill all the fluids and regrease anything that might be causing it. I will let everyone know what the outcome is. Thanks everyone!

Leaving it in Auto mode is what my dealer recommends, and should not have any negative effect on transmission even at highway speeds.

I personally leave mine in 2WD when it is not snowing or raining heavily, just to get a little better MPG's.

IMO if you are not driving in conditions where traction may be an issue, 2WD drive mode should be used. At a minimum, it would save wear on the transfer case and reduce fuel consumption.

If you are doing a tight turn on dry pavement it might engage 4HI with a potential to bind the drive train.

Owner's Manual recommends keeping the truck in 2wd unless you are in a situation where traction may be reduced. The 4wd setup on these trucks is part-time. Thus it is not built be in Auto mode all the time. If it were it would be full-time 4wd.

So whats the point in auto mode? Why even give the option if you have to change to it anyways. That just doesn't make sense. To me auto should always be on so that way it can change if it needs to otherwise I would switch it myself to 4wd if I felt like I needed to. Oh well to each his own. So after getting it back from the mechanic.....its fixed!!!!!!!

So apparently the transfer case fluid is supposed to be blue.....it was a dark brown. So he serviced the transfer case and replaced the fluid. The slip joint was excessively rusted as well. He cleaned and lubed the slip joint on the rear driveshaft and reprogrammed it for tire size.

I also had him change the transmission fluid as well. Apparently none of the suggested GM maintenance in the manual has been done. I am going back in next thursday to have him service the front and rear differentials as well. He said other than that I should be good as far as service.

Anything else you guys suggest I should do? It has 70,880 miles. Thanks everyone!!

Good to hear that the fluid changes/lube did the trick.

Sounds like the 60k (or is that 50k) service was not completed. Brake fluid and coolant should also be changed (check the manual and also inspect the fluids).
