Not bad at all Scott, and you seem to be more of a mechanic than most. I replaced both backing plates on my 01 due to rust and rot, damn salt, and not the 2 piece crap ones, which meant i had to split the rear. While i was there i did the seals since the axles were out. Most important thing I remember is to get the c clips in the right way otherwise they will slip off and bye bye axle...this was 7-8 years ago and i am by no means a mechanic. Get your nose plugs out tho...
I hate diff fluid! Stinks.

Well, my diff fluid shouldn't smell TOO bad. I just replaced it in February of this year. I was a bit nervous because I saw a few metal shards in there. They we're about the size of a piece of rice. Then I had to redo it again a month or two later because the diff cover gasket was leaking. I ended up getting a new cover from Rockauto because it looked almost as if the cover had been warped from over tightening the bolts at some point. New cover and gasket and it hasn't leaked since. Thankfully I didn't see any more metal shards

Thankfully I didn't see any more metal shards in the oil when I had to drain it the second time. I wonder if the metal shards were left over from when my spider gears took a shit. Back in 2012, my spider gears got stripped out and I paid a shop to replace them. They said they "flushed" all the metal shards out and put new spiders in along with new fluid. I don't know much about diffs and spider gears and all, but I inspected them as best I could with a flashlight and I don't see any obvious wear on them. I guess I will just keep an eye on them and inspect them every time I have the diff cover off. Speaking of the diff cover, it's also another good reason I replaced it because it had a HUGE dent in it from the inside, I guess from when the spider gears took a shit.
