yeah, i fixed it myself. I bought a new surround and dust cap. You have to strip everything down to the main cone and then attach the surround to the main cone and then add the dust cap. Its just really messy to do because of all old adhesive being removed with rubbing alcohol. The surround kit comes with a glue similar to or maybe is E6000.. went back together well and back to loud as hell. I think the JL dealer wanted $350 to send it back for repair..

Good job, that's a lot of work. I attempted to put new foam on my old Cerwin Vega AT-15's but discovered one of my cones was bad, of course after I scraped all the old off and put the new ones on. I took them to Freeman Tuell in southeast Dallas and they fixed them right up for like $120 for the pair. New surrounds, new cones and dust caps.

Changed intermediate shaft and bearing today. The shaft was SHOT. Grease all over the place and would slide up and down freely. Bearing looked newer but I recommend changing it. You can see in the pics where the tabs inside the bearing have worn away.

How hard of a job was that? What was involved?

I don't consider it hard. Moderate for some especially if not mechanically inclined. I think it will test your patience though. Video below is it little long winded and there are a couple of tips to make it easier I found in the comments. For instance, before you "lock" the down steering wheel with the seat belt you should turn it to make access to both shaft nuts easier. One bolt is connected to the shaft inside the engine bay and the other is near the gas pedal. Loosen both to about hand tightness but DON'T remove them. Next straighten out the steering wheel and then secure it in place with the seatbelt. Continue to remove the bolts at that point. There are a few video out there for other references as well. This definitely tightened up the steering wheel. Very happy with it.
