What is this and what dose it do?

Hey guys, I just picked up a 96 2 door and I'm having a few issues.

1. There is a silver box under the dash not he steering column close to the fire wall that clicks every time i shut the truck off. I have tried replacing it with 4 different once from the junk yard with no success. What is it for and what dose it do?

2. my 4x4 dash switch is in 4LO but the truck is 100% NOT. it is in 4HI. I can't get it to change to 2HI or to 4HI on the switch. (I have pulled my axel actuator and it will not move when the switch is pushed but if bench tested it will move from all the way in to all the way out so I'm sure it works, unless you guys have other experience)

Im not sure if either of these problems are linked but I'm stumped. I am going to pick up a bother switch tomorrow maybe that will help me out.

I can post up a few pictures as well if you need me to, I'm not sure if my description has been the best

Is this unit located on the left side of steering column up high and against the firewall almost and do you still have the original one that came with truck?

yeah I do still have the original one, after switching them didn't help i just put the old one back in.
yes is it on the left side of the column very close to the firewall.
and yes the 4LO is on 100% of the time even if i try and change to anything else

Put the original back in and disconnect with in dash put tranny in neutral then turn on vehicle if no case change then plug with in if still no change in case shifting but still indicated in 4wd then the encoder on shift motor is defective and the shift motor assembly requires replacing. When TCCM sees a defective encoder it defualts to 4hi position. Remember there are two fuses related 4*4 so check them bothas well. If anything is wrong in system you will not know until shift motor is fixed first. The encoded tell the Transfer Case Control Module the current position of shift linkage and is a single unit with shirt motor. About $175 I think.

When you do remove old motor you will have to manually shift case to two wheel again so new motor will fit easily during install. DO NOT attempt to adjust the shift motor to suit the tcase as you will damage it.

Weel i spent the night in my garage doing some routine maitinence, fields, and general snooping cus its a new to me truck.

Sunlit I did what you said however the only thing that has changed is the silver box won't stop clicking after i shut the truck off. I simply unplugged it and left it for the time being, I believe the encoder motor is the problem like you said. Im not to sure what it looks like or where it is exactly.

Is there any issue with driving while that box is unplugged for the next day or two?

No but keep in mine you may be stuck in 4wd until fixed and not good if on dry solid roads. That clicking noise you are hearing is the internal relays activating brake release and motor circuits. If needed pull out both fuses because if I relay goes as well it will stay latched and drain your battery.

Ok I dont want to thread jack, I just have a quick newb question. My front 4x4 actuator does not work and I want to remove it, but I am not sure if any fluids will come out if I do? I unscrewed it a few turns and a few drops of dark fluid started to drip so I tightened it back up. Like I said, total new question. Haha. But I would rather ask than make a huge mess on the driveway.. Thank you guys!
