Well "Gov-Loc" is the only one that makes sense because the sound is not present until it has engaged, prior to engaging totally silent.

Is there any other checks or test I can do?

Would turning the hub's with the drive-shaft disengaged cause anything else to grind like maybe the Carrier Bearing? I doubt that one though.

Should I pop off the back cover plate and take a look inside?

There is another thread on here about the "Gov-Loc" and Ebay and Summit had rebuilt replacements for $300 to $450.

If in fact my "Gov-Loc" has gone bad, is this a good replacement??

unknown at this time.
the gov loc uses heavy flyweights it should not engage just by spinning the wheels by hand. stop stalling and pull the cover off already and inspect. and i found no specific test for the g80 unit just rear end noises in general. it would be preferred if you want a traction device a tru-trac for $465 would be ideal. it has smooth engagement and transperent engagement so as to not have shock loading effect and needs no break-in. read about it here http://www.eaton.com/ecm/groups/public/@pub/@eaton/@per/documents/content/ct_128482.pdf

OK, pulled the rear diff cover and everything appears intact. Ran a magnet around the bottom of the pan and then dug my hand in there and found nothing. In the picture you can see metal shavings have collected on the diff cover magnet, but that's 220k miles later because it appears that the gasket is original and the rear-end looks stock and untouched.

Could those shavings be the root of my problem or do I need to look elsewhere?

Thanks again for all your help...

Also, a Tru-loc is not for me, I never go off-road and the truck only has to work when I tow my 24' center console fishing boat.

My off-road days ended when I replaced the 2nd engine in my Jeep CJ-7 years ago. :-(

DAMN!!! Sadly enough, finally got a friend over to help me out and the sound is not coming from the rear-end at all. It's coming from the transfer case. Will upload a video to youtube and post it hear soon..
