99 Yukon brake pedal becomes hard to press when braking suddenly. Power assist prob?

you have a z56 and z60 rpo code on your build tag correct?

That's a negative on the z codes. More bleeding may be the answer I don't think we got much bled out since each press of the pedal was barely getting anything out for the rears.

Not trying to cost you more headaches, and money, but I think it was mentioned earlier, the proportioning valve?

Here is a pic of all my codes just to save me trips out to the car while I'm supposed to be working. The proportioning valve looks like another possibility and not something I want to think about having to replace.

ok no police package but you do have the correct mc. take your vin to dealer and ask for a free build sheet that decodes the spi label.

My 1997 Tahoe has the larger 11" Drums, and as I'm trying to recall, I don't remember having what was termed the "police package" per se, but since I ordered the truck with heavy duty suspension, the towing package, tranny cooling package, the whole shebang on all drivetrain-chassis upgrade options.

Perhaps this police package option was then included in these other options?

As for the back drums, I would assume once one is fairly close with drum shoe adjustments, then backing in reverse a number of times, and applying the brakes firmly should further adjust them. That is if there is no seizure of those shoe adjusters.

Some months back when I replaced my Booster, and did another Bleed, I did pop both Drums again, removed both adjusters, dis-assembled both, wire brushed, and applied a very light coat of anti-sieze on the threads, re-assembled and re-installed them.

About the only other thing I can offer, is the possibility of air still being in the system. And the likely culprit of the cause might be the ABS Unit. I know basically squat about the ABS, but do know there are special tools made for bleeding the ABS, and as well that a code can be pulled up-cleared I think also via the ECM.

basically if you have had the vehicle with a typical brake fluid load and things work you only bleed out the abs if air got inside the unit while it acting on a wheel lock up. and even then you need a bi-directional scanner to actuate the test to get it bled out with more of the regular bleeding as well.

When I get a chance I will try some more bleeding and then check out and adjust if necessary the rear drums and then go from there.

My brakes feel the exact same way, and have felt that way for over a year and a half since i bought the Hoe. Normal stops are ok (although the pedal goes down farther than i would like before engaging, although I got used to it). But when I have to stop hard, it feels like the brakes are woefully inadequate, and i really have to stand on the pedal for results.

I have procrastinated, but have planned on adjusting the rears and bleeding everything to be sure. Hoping that is enough to take care of it, but will check back with how it works out for me.

when you brake a lot to heat them quite a bit in a very short amount of time, like a minute or two, does it still drop to the same level but brakes are weaker? does it become stiffer and worse brake effect?

Sunlit, not sure if you were asking me, but I will tell you the brakes are consistently soft. The only thing that helps is if I pump them up (a few quick pumps) before I brake normally, it sets the pedal a bit higher.

I have not really warmed them up enough to experience brake fade.

you either have air trapped in there, misadjusted rears, there is a bad seal in the mc or leakage at a wheel.

if you get them hot and pedal get spongy while pressing back and forth while the actual braking effort remains relatively the same then air is the likely culprit.
