I'm not 100% sure, but I believe that is exactly how that works. If you look at the one that is still intact, it has a hex on the end? So, try grabbing the broken stub with vise grips and see if it turns. Don't wrench ******* it, you don't want to break any plastic bits if this is not the correct way to do it.
