I didn't even think on how the trans reacts to the engine, it completely makes sense. I may just end up towing it but I'm going to order one of those ODB AFM disablers to test the engine and my work for leaks.
And you are safe to drive it, just make sure to keep it at light throttle like you are saving fuel. The transmission shift pressure never gets lower than when you are driving at light throttle, so you have no worry of burning it up. Its when you get into half throttle and up that can become an issue. Basically your engine reports the wrong amount of torque the engine is putting out, so the trans doesn't give enough pressure. It also can be in the wrong shift timing tables, so shifts could be flaired and slow when they should be firm in and out.
