Ethanol Free Gasoline

I have an airplane and have easy access to 100LL avgas. I use it in my lawn care 2 and 4 stroke engines. I use it in my race engines if the compression ratio is less than 11.5 to 1. But I would never use it in anything with a catalytic converter. There is still a lot of lead in it.

Also the certified quality fuel of avgas.

( I was also told there is nitromethane in 3 formulas ....A , B , & C. .....Certain nitro tunes must be considered for which formula you are using. )

Running 87 in my 2007 and 2008 6.2 would put me on the edge of pinging. I would highly recommend running 91 or higher.

I run only 93 octane in my truck, and I had it tuned for 93 octane. I don't see much E85 in my neck of the woods.

Finding the best performing fuel for your ride...... " Just at the edge of pinging" is the best performance for a street engine.

( I got my information from a couple of NHRA Funny Car tuners / fuel chemists. )

Yeah, but those guys tear their engines down after EACH pass. I learned that the hard way with cracked pistons, so I like to adjust it to the edge and then back it off so there's NO ping or knock even on the hottest day, sacrificing peak horsepower for durability.

As Swathdiver stated, any motor longevity discussions from racing folks need to be looked at through their viewing lens. I'm thinking that not many of them are looking at 100k-300k mileage life for their motors.

My thought was ..... Try the required octane..... If all's good, try the next lower octane.

If that is also good ( no pinging )..... Then the lower is ok. If you are comfortable.

That's just it though, you will not hear the pinging but the knock sensor will and retard the timing giving you less power from the engine.

That statement from racers is true when the gas you run is a set octane. Tune it to just before there's detonation (ping) to get the most power.

Why have a 6.2l and run lower octane than recommended so it puts out less power, just get a 5.3l to begin with.... Lol

Uh, agree...... I am adding to the conversation about the fuel........

When it comes to the specifics, I am certainly not the most intelligent person in the room.

But please answer me this...... My '05 Yukon 5.3..... It runs fine with regular gas....( mostly driven around town )
SHOULD I still run a higher grade for longevity ??
