For those who have done AFM delete/cam swaps

Cam Phaser is VVT. The second journal has a groove for VVT oiling. BTR cam is probably non-VVT so you'll need to delete it and turn it off in the tune.
Yeah I know, but like I said there was a year or so where GM installed these things in the engine and did NOT activate them, so some trucks have all the gear to be VVT like a cam phaser but the way you know if it is active is if you have a 5 pin connector on the sensor that is on the timing cover the NON active VVT units have a 3 pin connector. The 2 extra pins on the VVT models are the ones that come to the VVT selinoid for the oil. That is what I have come up with through reasearch here on the forum and Google. I've been looking into this alot.

Cool, did not know that. This pertains to the L92 then right? Does this only affect the very earliest motors which had AFM hardware?

I thought they only installed the AFM hardware but did not activate it in the tune. Didn't know they did the same with the VVT stuff. Seems like a waste.

Vvt - variable valve timing
Afm or DOD - which ever you want to call it is - 4 cylinder mode

All 6.2 / l92s have vvt. And the early ones had the afm hardware ; but wasnt activated.

I am glad you called this out.

Curiosity, are you actually trying to delete the VVT? Or the AFM/DOD? If you are trying to delete VVT, can I ask why? It’s actually a pretty good design. The DOD/AFM is a joke however lol.

Maybe, but I'm just going off of things I've looked up, (he say/she say) type things, on forums and post on Google. I'm still trying to figure this out. I wish I could find a solid source.

Mine didn't come with either....from what I have read active VVT had a 5 pin connector on the pigtail that connects to the sensor on the timing cover........mine only has a 3 pin connector(NON-VVT) from what I have read, I actually got this info from summit on the description on the VVT delete kit info. It said the 2 extra pins go to the VVT selinoid. I have a cam phaser but on my timing cover the 3 pin pigtail and like @Dannydean showed in the picture, I also have a smooth valley cover in my conclusion I have a NON-DOD and NON-VVT truck....at least that's what I have come up with....so I figuered since I have neither just getting a normal cam and for that I need to get rid of the NON active equipment aka cam phaser and all that jazz and just put in a normal 3 bolt cam gear.....which is why I'm wondering if I NEED to get a LS3 timing cover or can I just keep the one I have since the only thing that I will be changing is that cam gear, the cam gear on the truck is 1 bolt and my new cam is a 3 bolt...I already have the 5 pin to 3 pin adapter that came factory with the truck. So essentially only thing changing is my cam gear IF I can keep the factory timing cover if not I'll get the whole delete kit.

So I said the hell with it and got the VVT delete kit from Summit. Now I have all the parts I need to get this truck back on the road(hopefully). One question though, how to I keep the cam from spinning to take the cam bolt off?? I line up the dots then go to take the single cam bolt out and it spins the engine...how do I stop this I have nothing I can jam to keep it from spinning like I did the crank bolt?

I usually use a impact gun. But u will have to figure out how to lock it down if you want to retorque the cam bolts during install. Also the vvt is 2 pin the cam sensor is 3 pin and the both of them join together to make up the 5 pin (down by the oil pan area. I believe). But with the delete kit you should be fine.20190522_204204.jpg
