8-speeds will be in ALL variations of the full size SUVs, including 5.3L, by summer according to the GM Powertrain articles. GM's Toledo plant just has to ramp up production supply to meet demand. For now, since 6.2L have lower production numbers and are the costlier variants in the model lineups, they get it first. Once there are enough 8-speeds to go around, the 6-speed will be discontinued permanently.

Humer,
The 8 speed is all about fuel mileage. It allows GM to run an overall higher gear with the shifts much closer in order to make them less dramatic.
I'm sure that GM and others are going to add even more gears in the future, sooner rather than later.

When tuned the 5.3 is really a very capable motor even in these big SUVs

I respectfully disagree. You can tune it all you want with whatever electronic gizmo you want, but you won't gain any torque to speak of.

Horsepower is a useless figure because it's usually made at top of the RPM scale. Torque is made down low, and in a gasoline engine, it's about displacement.

If you look at the Cummins ISX semi truck engines, most make less than 450 horse, but twist out 1850 -2050 lbs of torque at around 1,300 RPM.
Yes, diesel makes power differently from gas engines, but the focus is on power to move weight at low RPM.

For gasoline to grunt out low end power, it takes big Pistons.

Those companies they are there to make money, the goal is when you walk out of the dealership you have the must expensive car from the lot or if you order one the want the same. Do you know the new escalade have 2 suspension setting, which the Denali don't have.
If I want that option I have to go escalade, and is 8-10 k more.
They don't make money in low profile cars the make money in high ends cars.
