Yeah it's worth a shot man. It's easy enough to pull it out and check the gear. I felt like an idiot for not thinking of that and paying the dealer 100 bucks to tell me that was the problem.

Mine is starting to run a little rough too. It is just now up to 90k miles and I've never replaced anything but the plugs on this thing. I think it's time for a good solid tune-up. Plugs, wires, dist and cap and see how that goes. If it's still acting up, maybe an injector swap out too.

Might want to replace your fuel filter...wonder if this is my problem with my 96 tahoe with 149k on it. Runs great till you get about 3k then it seems to lose power and start knocking. I was thinking it was the injector spider but from the sounds of it might be the gear throwing my timing off just enough to screw it up
Though a bit more expensive than the ebay version, this one (see bottom of linked page) has an aluminum lower housing as well as the shaft.
