Yeah it's worth a shot man. It's easy enough to pull it out and check the gear. I felt like an idiot for not thinking of that and paying the dealer 100 bucks to tell me that was the problem.

Mine is starting to run a little rough too. It is just now up to 90k miles and I've never replaced anything but the plugs on this thing. I think it's time for a good solid tune-up. Plugs, wires, dist and cap and see how that goes. If it's still acting up, maybe an injector swap out too.

Mine had 160k on all the original gear and it started to run a little rough and then I went through some horrible rain and she broke down because water got in the distributor. Changed everything and she runs smoother than shit. And definitely feeling the mpg :)

wonder if this is my problem with my 96 tahoe with 149k on it. Runs great till you get about 3k then it seems to lose power and start knocking. I was thinking it was the injector spider but from the sounds of it might be the gear throwing my timing off just enough to screw it up

Though a bit more expensive than the ebay version, this one (see bottom of linked page) has an aluminum lower housing as well as the shaft.

Might want to replace your fuel filter...

I have done plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil, and fuel filter. Plus I just did the egr tube since it was leaking really bad and its still falls on its face after 3000 or 3500 rpm to 5000 rpm. Its starts to ping and knock or basicly run like crap. It seems to me like the timing is advancing to far or not enough for the higher rpms

When my distributor was on its way out it ran fine at high rpms. It would sputter and run like shit when I would try to drive like normal but it ran fine when I would really give it some gas. Until one day I stepped on it getting on the highway and the gear stripped out completely. Just throwing that out there. But I would pull the distributor and check it before you buy a new one. It's not hard to do, just be sure to mark it and put it back exactly how it came out.

I haven't pulled it yet but I did check it for slop last night. I took of the cap and grabbed the rotor. i was able to turn it about 1/4 to 1/2" counterclockwise. so when its running it would be out a bit I would assume. not sure if that much slop is normal or not.
