looks like my engine took a shit :( loud metal to metal noise it still runs no misfires

but sounds like a diesel engine
Can it be saved?? the VVT Camshaft for sure now will need to be replaced(this is part of the emissions )

so it will need to be repaired instead of disabling AFM and VVT

but metal to metal noises are not normal... normally these sounds go away after a few seconds since i'm pumping 0w30 (it's only 54F outside) oil is still fresh,(i had just changed it a few weeks ago it only has 300 miles on it) oil said it was at 70PSI when it started up

this really sucks I was going to take the rig out for a ride tonight to help get my grandpa setup at his new place ...

should i just bite the bullet and put motorkote.. in it

I ended up taking my dads 2013 Toyota corolla...

That sucks. Sorry to hear that.

Got any video of it so we can hear the noise you’re hearing incase someone might guide you to something else?

I don't have to smog tell 2024 but i don't want to start misfiring and damage the CAT (this will just add more cost to the repairs)

i did make a video but it corrupted the file :( phone shut off while recording so i'll have to wait as the sound settled down but it's still quit audible ...

i'll try uploading it to youtube it might fix the video

I had a hard time following everything regarding the camshaft, deleting or not deleting AFM, etc.

As far as Motorkote, if you actually do have loud metal on metal noises coming from your engine, IMO, an oil additive isn't going to do a thing.

If you have a collapsed lifter, it is pretty straight forward pulling the valve covers and finding it.

0w-30 it’s too thin for these engines. These lifters and camshafts need a lot of protection on start up, but especially hot under load. 5w-30 minimum, and I run 5w-40 when I’m towing.

Also, I don’t understand the connection you’re making between VVT and emissions. You can run a 3 bolt cam in these and have the ECM properly tuned for it, and you’ll pass smog.

It also could be a chewed up roller lifter that took the cam with it. That is usually associated with 200k plus mile motors. Mainly gen 3 motors. I have read instances where it has happened as early as 90k miles. Those types of failures usually don’t misfire like a collapsed afm lifter keeping the valves closed 100% of the time, but can from time to time. This happens because the lifter guide trays wear out and allow the lifter rotate in its bore against the cam putting the roller part and the cam surface. But it could be an afm lifter. You won’t know until you pull a valve cover and see if it’s on an afm cylinder or regular cylinder. Usually when a roller lifter fails it will squeal and tap like crazy. After you drive in it for a bit it is a consistent knock.

I would delete the afm system when your in there replacing lifters. Those afm lifters will fail time and time again.

Parts list goes as follows:

head gaskets
Intake manifold gaskets
Exhaust manifold gaskets
Valve cover gaskets
Front timing cover gasket and seal
Oil pan gasket
16 ls7 lifters
4 ls2 lifter trays
2 sets of cylinder head bolts
New crank pulley bolt
New non afm camshaft of your liking. (Can be oem or after market single bolt or three bolt. To run three bolt you must delete VVT if equipped which is 2010 and newer engines)
Ls2 three bolt cam sprocket (if using three bolt cam)
New ls2 timing chain
New ls2 timing chain damper (aka tensioner)
Melling standard flow oil pump.
Oil pressure relief valve plug.
New valve springs ( if going with a bigger cam)
New exhaust manifold bolts
ARP cam bolt set (if going with three bolt cam)
Non afm valley cover (like out of a 4.8)
Coolant
Oil and oil filter of choice.

This is a pretty basic list for what it comes down to. Basically you are removing the physical hardware that shuts the cylinders off when afm is activated. You must also get a computer tune to have afm shut off and vvt turned offf if you decide to delete that too.

At the end of the day you will have a ful time v8 and have long term reliability of the gen 3 motors.

it's a premium brand 0w30 full synthetic.... it's rated to meet 5w30 and 10w30 requirements that is what they claim on the packaging API SP / ILSAC GF-6a I started the engine again and the "noise calmed down" after 15 seconds...

the ECM is encrypted apparently no tunes for it.. no EGR as well this is how they were able to get LEV2 certification....

but it still has a scream noise (i suspect a pulley went bad) i'll try and make a video in the morning using my canon Video camera...

Make sure you do not reuse the stock cam. It is designed for afm and the lift on the afm lobes is different compared to a stock lm7 cam. Your truck will misfire and run like crap and annoy you.
