Sorry if this sounds dumb, but if i dont know i ask, regardless of how it makes me sound, but im guessing that is the trans i have in my tahoe, 4l60E. Isnt this a weak point in these trucks, if you start making power? (off topic)

I do have a gto w/ a high stall converter (like 3500) and love it, but w/ a stock tahoe, would it really help? and what size ( i guess is how you put it) in other words, i suppose like a 2500 stall or lower?

Sorry just this information is unknown to me and im always looking to learn more.

yup, you and all of us have a 4L60e, look for aTrailblazer stall, out of an inline Trailblazer...see them new for $150...behind a 5.3 they will do 2500-2700.
Here are the part numbers:
24213392: 99-02 4.8L
24213393: 99-03 5.3L 6.0L
24228708: 02-03 TB 4.2L
24228709: 04 TB 4.2L
12491321: 05 TB 4.2L

Or Chris at Circle D has a modified one, for $375.

Thanks, i didnt even think about circle d, i know chris. And they arent that far from me. right next to where i used to live. Hes really good friends w/ a friend of mine. I'll have to call him and see what he says to do.

And a stall bascially holds the power until that certain rpm right? and this would help w/ the low end, since my gearing is so low. I do like the low rpms on the highway i have now.

yeah i read your post somewhere about keeping 3.23 gears and just add a blower, which i would love to do. Adding a procharger or something. I love the idea of this tank pulling up to something and unexpectantly beating it. I would love to have this thing do 12's or so. Always wanted to do something everyone would think i was crazy for doing.

but for the stall a 3200 isnt to much for stock tahoe w/ 5.3

Yeah, the TA has me spoiled, and it was 6spd, oddly enough, this is the first auto i ever had, i miss being able to hold the power and change it when i want to. Ha ha. to the comment about drive in 3rd, is that what 4.11 would be like? If so forget that, ive done it by mistake once and liked the power range being there, rpms, but not for the amount of driving i do.

No way to know without doing some calculations, I am sure driving in the 3rd would be an exaggeration, but you get the idea of the noise, fuel consumption, etc.
I would drive it around for a while, and do some research before you change anything, The MPG might already be a shock after a few months of driving, and instead of looking for performance, you might be looking to save fuel/$.

Good Luck man!

get a high stall converter. I run a 3600 stall in my built tranny, with 3.73 gear ratio and 31.5" tires which are 285/50/20... so trust me get a 3200 and be wanting more after.... ;)

Alright got a noob question, i recently found out i have 3.23 gears on my Tahoe, which explains why its so slow taking off, but good on the freeway. Well, im tired of the slow take off, feels like im taking off in 2nd gear. But reading up just all around, looks like some go to 4.10. I know basically nothing about gear changes. So if i go to say some 3.73, b/c im used to my trans am, (i know different) but that just seems to be a good all around gear. Right? IM assuming that would help out quite a bit, or would 4.10's be better. Im not looking to loose to much mpg, just trying to get this big heavy turd to take off, after take off its fine. How will doing gears effect the mph, like on freeway speeds, 70 - 80mph. Not really a big difference or would it? Ive seen threads about it, but some on here loose me, or are about tire changes.

And wheres a good place to get them? And does it have to be for a tahoe or is a silverado/gmc the same?

Sorry for noob question, but gears and rear ends are foreign to me.

(Its for a 05 tahoe, 2wd, 5.3)

Thanks for help,

Mike

Dude, I was thinking the same thing. I recently found out that I have 3.42's on my 4.8L

After a lot of thought, the truth is we both have good enough gearing, we just need to up the power/torque output. Otherwise you'll end up hating the highway. I have my bike geared down like that, and if it weren't so damn fun, I'd hate riding on highway with it. The highway will INSTANTLY turn a geared vehicle into a gas HOG! No matter how efficient it may have been in the past. It's much harder on the engine internals too.

My conclusion has been to increase torque output first, then take it from there. Keep me posted as to what you end up doing. Maybe we can help each other. (FYI: A cam might be the smartest first step.)
